5 Things to Know About Lions call-up Stuart Hogg

After heading to Australia as the youngest player on Tour in 2013, he went to New Zealand four years later with his sights set on securing the Test full-back jersey after some stellar displays for Scotland.

But his trip to the Land of the Long White Cloud was ended before the Test series against the All Blacks could get underway – he suffered a facial injury when he accidentally collided with Conor Murray in the third match of the Tour against the Crusaders.

Here are five things you should know about the Exeter Chiefs and Scotland fullback.

Hogg got married in 2016 to long-term partner Gill and they have three children together, Archie, Olivia and George.

In 2012, following his Scotland debut, he discovered he was a distant relative of George Best. A close relative of Best recognised the link after seeing Hogg play on television.

Hogg said at the time: “It turns out my granny’s granny was the sister of George’s great-grandfather.”

He revealed his signature ‘W’ celebration is a tribute to best friend that passed away in April, 2009. The poignant tribute has become iconic whenever the 28-year-old has scored a try at international or club level.

"I was involved in a car crash that unfortunately killed my best mate,” said Hogg.

“We were going to party and one of the lads had literally just passed his driving test. I did rock, paper, scissors with the three boys in the car to decide who sits in the front.

“I’m trying to take him I just want to take him on the journey that I live and every time I score a try I do the W for him. My first tattoo was his initials on my ribs too.

“I just want to make him and his family proud and I miss him very much.”

Hogg comes from a talented rugby family in the Borders. His father, John, played as a championship winning full-back for Hawick before becoming a rugby referee. His brother, Graham, has played for Scotland in the IRB Sevens World Series as well as representing his country at under-18, under-19 and under-20.
