Scott Robertson’s hopes of guiding New Zealand to an Autumn Grand Slam came crashing down as England roared back from conceding 12 early points to secure only their ninth win over the All Blacks in 120 years, claiming the crowning achievement of Steve Borthwick’s three-year reign.

After nine straight victories against lesser opposition, England passed the true test of their development with flying colours, scoring four tries amid a delirious atmosphere at Allianz Stadium.

A crowd of 81,953 had expected the usual nail-biting finish between two titans, but instead they witnessed England’s dominance, as wing Tom Roebuck pounced on a loose ball and slid in for a 78th-minute try that stretched the margin to two converted scores, leaving New Zealand’s Grand Slam dream in tatters.

1. Ethan de Groot – 6

Came off at half-time after an industrious but quiet performance at loosehead. Held his own in the scrum but struggled to deal with the England substitutes.

2. Codie Taylor (Vice-Captain) – 7

Aggressive carries and strong work at the breakdown, showing great footwork for the first try. The man oozes quality. Gave away a sloppy penalty at the start of the second half and received a harsh yellow card, costing his team the lead.

3. Fletcher Newell – 6

A solid but quiet performance from the All Black tighthead. Held his own in the scrum but struggled against the England substitutes.

4. Scott Barrett (Captain) – 6

The captain seemed to have England’s number at the lineout, but his pack was overpowered this afternoon.

5. Josh Lord – 7

Gave a good account of himself and caused England problems at the lineout.

6. Simon Parker – 6

Had a strong first half but was sacrificed for a replacement prop during New Zealand's yellow card and was replaced by Wallace Sititi at 54 minutes.

7. Ardie Savea (Vice-Captain) – 7

The All Blacks’ talisman was everywhere today, as he always is. Aggressive carries and a nightmare at the breakdown. Just beaten by a stronger forward unit on the day, he can hold his head high.

8. Peter Lakai – 8

Had a quiet, industrious first half but stepped up when his team fell behind. Led the game in carries and threw himself into tackles and the breakdown all afternoon. Showed great pace to stay with Pollock during an England breakaway and prevent a try. A performance not deserving of the losing side.

9. Cam Roigard – 8

Had a very good first half, getting the ball out quickly and causing England’s defense problems. Brilliant box kicking and a 50:22 to further pressure the English. Seemed to be having a great game and was surprisingly withdrawn early.

10. Beauden Barrett – 6

Spilled an early spiral bomb but appeared to bounce back with some excellent out-of-hand kicking. Missed touch from a crucial penalty immediately after Ollie Lawrence’s try. Ripped the ball from Ben Earl to prevent England’s third try. Came off for McKenzie after 54 minutes.

11. Leicester Fainga’anuku – 8

The best-named man in rugby clearly wanted to put on a show at the stadium he is named after. Lethal in the wide channels, running over defenders and powering over from short range for his try. England shut him down in the second half, but it was still a stellar day for the winger.

12. Quinn Tupaea – 6

Had a quiet game in attack, often used as a dummy runner rather than a key ball carrier. Some decent defensive work but not much else of note. Replaced by Lienert-Brown after 56 minutes.

13. Billy Proctor – 7

A good performance in the centre. His best moment came early when his tackle stopped Underhill from offloading to Ollie Lawrence, saving a try.

14. Leroy Carter – 6

Looked lively with the ball and showed great pace on his chip-and-run. Missed a key tackle for Ollie Lawrence’s try but redeemed himself with a phenomenal kick chase from his own line and won a breakdown penalty 10 metres from England’s line.

15. Will Jordan – 8

New Zealand’s set-piece attack ran through his hands in the double pivot. His pace and quality passing unlocked the wide channels. Scored a deserved try in the 65th minute after running another excellent line and trotting under the posts.

REPLACEMENTS:

16. Samisoni Taukei’aho – 5

Dominated at scrum time and failed to make any impact.

17. Tamaiti Williams – 5

Struggled to handle England’s power when he came on. Put himself about and was strong in New Zealand’s driving maul but failed to make a major impact.

18. Pasilio Tosi – 5

Came on as scrum cover during New Zealand’s yellow card and immediately conceded a penalty. He managed to get one back on Ellis Genge, but it wasn’t his day as England’s power bench quickly took control.

19. Sam Darry – 5

Had a decent game when he came on but failed to really leave his mark.

20. Wallace Sititi – 6

Came on after 54 minutes but was outshined by England’s bench. A disappointing day for New Zealand’s star youngster.

21. Cortez Ratima – 6

Came on at 9 early in the second half and couldn’t quite live up to the player he replaced.

22. Anton Lienert-Brown – 5

Replaced Tupaea after 55 minutes and arguably made New Zealand's attack worse. A day to forget for the talented veteran.

23. Damian McKenzie – 6

Came on for Barrett at 50 minutes but was beaten to the ball by Pollock for England’s game-sealing try.
