Andy Farrell confirms FOUR backroom Lions appointments

Nucifora, a former Brumbies coach and Australian international, steps into the Lions set-up on a consultancy basis. With stints as performance director for Ireland and Scotland on his CV, he’s no stranger to building world-class programmes. Reflecting on the appointment, Nucifora said:
“Having played against the Lions in 1989, I never imagined I’d one day work with them. Sport has a funny way of surprising you. I’m looking forward to bringing my insights into Australian rugby to help Andy and the team deliver a successful tour.”

Welshman Aled Walters has been named head of athletic performance. Walters, a World Cup winner with South Africa in 2019, is known for his innovative training techniques and deep understanding of player conditioning. He said:
“Watching the Lions as a child, I dreamed of being involved one day. It’s the pinnacle of rugby, and I can’t wait to work with some of the world’s best players as we take on the Wallabies.”

Irishman Vinny Hammond joins as head of analysis, bringing continuity to the Lions set-up. Having been part of the Lions’ previous tours to New Zealand (2017) and South Africa (2021), his experience will be vital in unlocking the Wallabies. “The Lions hold a special place in my heart,” said Hammond. “It’s an incredible honour to lead the analysis team for 2025.”

Speaking on the appointments, Farrell was full of praise for his new team:
“In David, Aled, and Vinny, we’ve got three of the very best. Their experience, knowledge, and passion will be instrumental as we prepare for a challenging tour and a highly anticipated Test series against the Wallabies.”

Lions CEO Ben Calveley added that the remaining backroom staff will be finalised after the 2025 Six Nations, as anticipation for the tour continues to build.
