British & Irish Lions make first major appointment ahead of next tour

The British & Irish Lions have confirmed the identity of their next head coach – but it's not for the men's side many supporters might have been expecting.

Instead, former England international Jo Yapp has been appointed to lead the first-ever British & Irish Lions Women's team on their historic inaugural tour of New Zealand in September 2027.

Yapp, who currently serves as England Rugby's Head of Women's Pathway, will take a sabbatical from the RFU to oversee the landmark tour. She will begin working with the Lions on a part-time basis before taking up the role full-time in January 2027.

The former Red Roses captain earned 70 England caps during her playing career and has previously coached Worcester Warriors, England Under-20s Women, the Barbarians and the Wallaroos.

Speaking after her appointment, Yapp said:

"To lead the first-ever British & Irish Lions Women's Team is an incredible honour and something I'm immensely proud of.

"The Lions represents the very best of our sport, and this Tour to New Zealand is an opportunity to create something truly special and help shape the future of women's rugby for years to come."

Lions Women's 2027 fixtures confirmed

Alongside the coaching announcement, the full fixture list for the inaugural tour has also been confirmed. The Lions will play five matches across New Zealand, culminating in a three-Test series against the Black Ferns.

A landmark moment for the Lions
