Sacked by his club for going to Las Vegas with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Martin Castrogiovanni was a cult figure to rugby fans all over the world.
What made tit such a serious matter is that the propi allegedly told Racing management that he was in Argentina seeing to a “family health problem” and could therefore not travel with rest of the Racing squad for their Champions Cup semi-final match.
He was ultimately sacked, and with that he disappeared from the rugby world.
'It was a good trip, a beautiful trip,' he laughs. 'Three days. I met those guys when I was playing in Paris (Ibrahimovic was with Paris Saint-Germain) and we became friends. When they won, they invited me to Vegas and I said, "Yes". Who would say no?
'We had a good time. A lot of drinks? Yes. We went out? Yes. Play the casino? Yes. Pool party? Yes. Everyone has seen the photos. When I woke up, I had a thousand messages with all the photos.
'What else do you do in Vegas? I won maybe £500, but I lost my contract with Racing. Maybe I should have handled it differently with my club, but I would do it again.'
4 other times rugby players got far too drunk
Rugby and alcohol are synonymous, so check out five occasions that rugby players got far too drunk down the years.
1. Mike Phillips
Lions scrum-half Phillips was sacked by his former club Bayonne for allegedly turning up drunk to a video analysis session in 2013. This incident came two years after he was involved in a late-night altercation in Cardiff city centre.
2. Danny Cipriani
The one-time golden boy of English rugby is no stranger to controversy but things took a turn for the worse when he was arrested during pre-season with Gloucester during a tour of Jersey in 2018. Other drunken escapades ended with the playmaker receiving a ban from driving and hospitalisation following a collision with a bus in Leeds.
3. Andy Powell
The former Wales and Wasps flanker was banned from driving for 15 months after taking a golf buggy onto the M4 motorway following a night of heavy drinking. He told a court he commandeered the vehicle to go and get some “munchies” from a service station before being pulled over for a breath test that he, naturally, failed.
4. Mike Tindall
Prominent royal and World Cup winner Tindall was kicked out of the Elite Player Squad and fined £25,000 after his part in a drunken night at dwarf-themed club night in Queenstown during the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Tindall was caught on CCTV canoodling with a woman in a second bar despite telling coach Martin Johnson he had returned alone to the team hotel after the dwarf party.
For five years, Martin Castrogiovanni refused to watch or talk about rugby. He’s been to Vegas with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, toured the world in a campervan and been mistaken by police for a drug trafficker. Now he’s back. Loved hearing his story for @MailSportmol.im/a/9255041
