Jermaine Ainsley’s proposed move to Saracens next season is now looking uncertain, after the prop cut short his time at Lyon to head back home to New Zealand.
LOU confirmed the development on social media, saying: “In order to fulfil his desire to return home to New Zealand, Jermaine Ainsley has been released from his contract with immediate effect.
"The president and the entire club would like to thank him for his dedication and commitment during his two seasons with LOU!”
The 30-year-old is dealing with a serious back injury, prompting his early return. The former Australia international, who has also been selected for the All Blacks XV, joined Lyon in the summer of 2024 from the Highlanders.
Ainsley hasn’t featured since Lyon’s Top 14 clash with Toulon at the end of February.
Saracens announced his signing back in February, but following his early departure from Lyon, it remains unclear whether he will link up with the North London side ahead of next season.
