"Consequences" - World Rugby demand England must change stadium name for Rugby World Cup

The newly minted York Community Stadium, a jewel in the historic city of York, takes center stage as a host for the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup. With a capacity exceeding 8,000, this stadium blends modern facilities with a sense of community pride.

The home of English rugby since 1909, Twickenham was renamed Allianz Stadium earlier this month in a major commercial deal, with the change officially taking effect from September.

Holding 82,000 fans, the stadium isn’t just the backdrop for international fixtures – it also plays host to domestic clashes, grassroots rugby events, and even blockbuster music concerts.

The decision to rebrand hasn’t gone down well with everyone. Former England head coach Sir Clive Woodward slammed the move, claiming the RFU has “sold its soul” and calling it a “very sad day” for English rugby.

However, World Cup organisers have confirmed the venue will be referred to as Twickenham throughout the tournament due to strict licensing rules with governing bodies and sponsors.

This means the Women’s World Cup will become the first major global event staged at the ground following the rebrand.

It’s not the first time rugby fans have seen this kind of switch. At the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, the Nissan Stadium was temporarily renamed Yokohama Stadium for the duration of the competition.
