Darragh Murray: Who is Ireland's newest Six Nations debutant?

Raised in Brideswell, County Roscommon, Murray began playing with Buccaneers before rising through the Connacht pathway, captaining their U18 side to Inter-provincial Championship glory in 2018. Murray made his senior debut for the province in 2022 and has since grown into a fan favourite at the Dexcom.

At international level, Murray represented Ireland at U20 level during the 2021 Six Nations and later toured South Africa with Emerging Ireland in 2024. Murray jumped at the opportunity for an extended run with Ireland this past July, as an assortment of Andy Farrell's top internationals were whisked away by the head coach for the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia.

Murray was handed his Ireland debut by acting interim Ireland head coach Paul O'Connell, after he had strung together a series of solid performances for the Ireland A set-up. Whilst Murray is yet to bag a senior try for either Ireland or Connacht, the lock was apart of Ireland's record men's test victory, in the rediculous 106-7 victory over Portugal this past Summer.

A lock by trade with his beloved province of Connacht, the 24-year-old has been making waves out West, having already collected a half century of caps since his senior debut in 2022. The second row has been rotated throughout the four and five jerseys for his province, with the nuance to slot across either side of the engine room. Upon his 38 Connacht starts, Murray has racked up 2,387 on-field minutes, which roughly breaks down to just shy of the hour mark at 56 minutes per match.

Murray gets the nod for a seat on the bench against Scotland, following the untimely calf injury to James Ryan, which has the Leinster man ruled out of the Triple Crown decider in tomorrow's early kick-off.

The starting engine room sees Joe McCarthy retain his place in the second row, with the versatile Tadhg Beirne shuffled back into the locks after a stint in the back row. It's an intriguing combination, with Jack Conan then promoted into the starting XV for a return to blindside flanker, to complete a back three alongside his Leinster teammates Josh van der Flier and Ireland skipper Caelan Doris.

Murray becomes the latest of an exciting line of Ireland hopefuls, to make their long awaited first cap in the Six Nations. So far throughout the Championship, Farrell has handed the likes of Munster's Edwin Edogbo and Michael Milne, Ulster's Cormac Izuchukwu, Rob Baloucoune and Nick Timoney and Cian Prendergast of Connacht their maiden tournament appearance.

Having entered the 2026 Six Nations in the midst of a declared 'injury crisis', with a new breed of talents out to make their mark upon the Ireland squad, Andy Farrell has certainly delivered in building depth within his squad. We are 17 months removed from the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with a reinforced Ireland squad set to provide Farrell with plenty of tough selection choices ahead of the trip to Australia.
