Edwin Edogbo has been one of the most talked about prospects in Ireland rugby for the last two years. The Munster starlet is set to make his Ireland debut today.

However, there's more to the future Ireland star's story that has made him a favorite of head coach Andy Farrell. Here are 15 fascinating facts about Edogbo that you probably didn’t know.

Edwin Edogbo facts:

1. He did not originally play Rugby Union.

Growing up in Cobh, Edogbo's brother Sean, who also plays for Munster, was the first of the pair to take up Rugby. In fact, he was described as not being the sporty type.

2. Born to Nigerian parents.

Edogbo was born on December 21, 2002, in Cork, Ireland, to Nigerian parents, Patience and Agustin Edogbo. Both Patience and Agustin are originally from Nigeria.

3. Hard work runs in the family.

After moving to Cork from Nigeria, Edwin's mother, Patience, works as a nurse. Meanwhile, his father works in retail.

4. The first Irish Cobh pirate in history.

Despite starting out late, Edogbo was the first Cobh Pirate club member to play rugby for the club's home province, Munster.

5. He originally had to borrow boots from his brother.

During his time as a Cobh Pirate, Edogbo's old coach, Kevin O’Keefe, was quoted as saying that ‘When Edwin started first, he had no rugby boots or anything, he might have borrowed a pair from his brother.’

6. His brother is also a talented prospect.

Edogbo's brother, Sean, is also one of the most talented prospects in the country. He featured in the Grand Slam-winning U20s side, making his debut for Munster this year.

7. Sharing a close bond and lifelong dream with his brother.

The two have never featured together for Munster. However, Edogbo revealed that he hopes that they will get to play together for the province one day.

“Seánie and I played one game with the Pirates in the Under-18s-and-a-half together, and that was good fun. We got a taste of that, and then we wanted to have a few more games together, so hopefully, we get that in the future."

8. He originally played a different position.

Edogbo first started out playing cents; however, he moved to Lock as he started to grow into his 6'5 frame.

9. Played through Adversity.

Edogbo had to play through a lot of adversity to make his debut for Ireland. Already in his career, he has suffered from two Achilles tendon ruptures, missing 22 months of rugby.

10. Broke the traditional mold.

Edogbo is one of the few Irish talents who did not attend a rugby school. Despite that, at the age of 19, he made his first-team debut for Munster.

11. Called 'destructive' by Irish teammates.

Edgobo's Ireland teammate, Joe McCarthy, had this to say about the star prospect ahead of his Ireland debut today.

“He’s been great. He’s a really big physical specimen. Our two packs in training, there’s a lot of big guys in there. [His is] A really good competition at maul time, he definitely has it a lot in that area and playing against him from Munster he’s very destructive. He’s a tough player to play against, just very strong.”

12. Backed by Ireland head coach Andy Farrell.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, head coach Andy Farrell revealed his perception of the Munster talent ahead of his Ireland debut.

“He's a quiet lad, but he's quietly obsessed with his rugby. Obviously, not coming from a rugby background, people tend to get this quickly to this type of position because there's something about them, and you can see that coming out of him.”

13. Ready for the Opportunity.

Speaking to the media ahead of the 2026 Six Nations, Edogbo expressed that he would be ready for his Ireland debut when it came around.

“If the opportunity came around. I would be more than ready for it. But with the nature of the squad, competition is huge, and everyone’s fighting for positions.

14. Learning from the Best.

Additionally, in this interview, the Munster star revealed that he has been learning from some of the best players in the Ireland squad.

“And I think there’s a huge learning aspect of this for me that shouldn’t get lost as well. I’m enjoying being around lads like Joe McCarthy, James Ryan, Tadhg Beirne, getting a bit of snippets off them and seeing what I can add to my game.”
