Freddie Steward stood down with immediate effect

Although the issue is not expected to end his season, Steward picked up the injury during the closing stages of Leicester’s victory over Sale Sharks at the weekend.

Geoff Parling said: “Fred sustained a thumb injury at the end of the Sale game that has unfortunately required surgery, we’re hopeful he’ll be back before the seasons end.”

With the Prem taking a break this weekend because of the European finals, Steward will benefit from additional recovery time ahead of Leicester Tigers’ fixtures against Exeter Chiefs and Bath. Parling’s side remain focused on securing a home semi-final.

Having collected 34 of a possible 35 points at Welford Road this season, Leicester will be eager to earn home advantage in the play-offs, especially with only a single point separating them from Bath in the standings.

Steward has been an influential figure for the Tigers throughout the campaign, making 19 appearances and playing a major role in the club’s strong season.

During Leicester’s 47-33 win away at Sale, Steward excelled under the high ball, once again showcasing one of his standout qualities.

The setback could also affect his England prospects ahead of the Nations Championship, having been included in this week’s alignment squad.

During the Six Nations, Steward started England’s opening three matches before receiving a yellow card against Ireland and being substituted before the half-hour mark. He did not feature again in the tournament after that.
