Bath have been dealt a major setback with the news that Will Muir will miss the rest of the season after suffering a shoulder injury in the Champions Cup semi-final defeat to Bordeaux.

The wing was forced off in the 66th minute in France earlier this month, despite scoring two tries in an outstanding individual performance.

Head of rugby Johann van Graan has confirmed Muir will undergo surgery later this week, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

“Unfortunately Will Muir is season-ending with his shoulder, which is a massive shame,” said Van Graan.

“That’s not great news for Will and not great news for us, but that is rugby.”

It is another cruel blow for Muir, who only returned in January after missing the first four months of the season with an ankle injury that also required surgery.

The 29-year-old had started 11 matches since his comeback and had worked his way back into England contention after winning his first two caps in Argentina last summer.

Van Graan praised Muir’s recent form and said the squad are “all gutted” for one of the most popular players at the club.

Bath have received more encouraging news on centre Louis Hennessey, who was injured in the same match. He is expected to return to training within the next two weeks.
