The 26-year-old livewire, who came through the ranks at the Cherry and Whites, will swap Kingsholm for Sandy Park as Rob Baxter continues to shape his next-generation squad.

Gloucester to Exeter: Chapman’s West Country switch

Born and bred in Gloucester, Charlie Chapman has been part of his hometown club since the age of 14, working his way through the pathway and racking up over 90 appearances in the famous red and white.

A product of Matson RFC and the Gloucester Academy, the electric No.9 got his first taste of senior rugby on dual-registration with Hartpury before making his Premiership debut in 2018.

His breakout campaign came in 2021/22, where his sniping runs and sharp service earned him the Young Player of the Season crown at Kingsholm.

Scotland caps, searing pace, and a new challenge

Internationally, Chapman represented Scotland U20 in both the Six Nations and Junior World Championship in 2018 – showcasing his talent on the global stage early on.

But now, after years in cherry and white, he’s hungry for a fresh start.

“I’m extremely excited to join Exeter Chiefs,” Chapman said. “Chiefs are a team with a rich history of success, and they have an extremely passionate fan base. I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

He’ll link up with former Gloucester teammate Stephen Varney in Devon, as the Chiefs build depth and dynamism at scrum-half.

Baxter’s verdict: “He’s got serious tempo”

“Charlie’s got a lot of Premiership experience but is also a guy looking for a new challenge and to win things,” Baxter said.

“He’s got great physical attributes – serious pace, very high fitness – so we think he can really add tempo and speed to our attack.”

“He’s a great character too, and we’re looking forward to working with him as we freshen things up for the new season.”

With Chapman now added to the mix, Exeter’s engine room at nine is looking increasingly stacked – and dangerous. With fresh faces, new coaches, and serious ambition, the Chiefs are cooking something for 2025.
