Luke Pearce was recently named the best referee in world rugby by RUCK, but his performance during Ireland's 42-12 victory over Argentina left plenty of supporters frustrated.
The English official found himself at the centre of several controversial moments during Friday night's Nations Championship clash.
Pearce communicated well and generally maintained control, but the stop-start nature of the contest made for a difficult watch.
The biggest concern was consistency.
One minute, incidents were being examined in extraordinary detail. The next, questionable passes and grounding decisions appeared to receive little scrutiny.
And Argentina were clearly frustrated.
Bizarre scrum incident leaves everyone baffled
Perhaps the strangest moment came during the first half, when confusion over Argentina's front-row options led to an uncontested scrum just five metres from their own line.
Argentina had suffered disruption after losing both hookers to head injury assessments.
However, the officials appeared to misunderstand which players were available to contest the scrum.
Irish Independent journalist Rúaidhrí O'Connor highlighted the extraordinary situation on X.
He wrote:
"Due to an officiating error, Ireland had an uncontested scrum on then Argentina 5m line instead of a proper scrum."
O'Connor explained that Pearce was subsequently informed loosehead prop Boris Wenger could hook, allowing contested scrums to resume.
He finished with a simple question: "How does this stuff happen?"
The confusion was difficult to understand at this level and disrupted the flow of an already frustrating contest.
Dan Sheehan controversy adds to frustration
Ireland hooker Dan Sheehan was also involved in one of the evening's biggest talking points.
A first-half try was ruled out following a TMO review of an incident involving Argentina scrum-half Gonzalo García.
Ireland were allowed to continue attacking following a separate infringement.
However, questions were also raised about the level of scrutiny applied to other incidents during the match.
Several supporters questioned potentially forward passes, while another Sheehan grounding also attracted debate.
Not every controversial decision was necessarily incorrect.
But the apparent inconsistency in when officials chose to examine incidents was difficult to ignore.
Fans deliver brutal verdict on Luke Pearce
Supporters took to social media to express their frustration, with some delivering particularly harsh assessments.
- @RucknPuck: A big admirer of Pearce but felt Argentina received very little from the officials.
- @MartinBarry20: Criticised missed forward passes and blocking, while questioning the support Pearce received from his TMO.
- @BAShelley: "Luke Pearce on an F rating right now. Usually a top quality ref but tonight very poor."
- @RickyHarries: Questioned why potentially forward passes were not being penalised.
However, the reaction was not entirely negative.
- Positive reaction: Some supporters praised Pearce's communication and his handling of confrontations between players.
That remains one of his greatest strengths.
RUCK referee grade: D
At RUCK, we recently named Luke Pearce the number one referee in world rugby. We stand by that decision.
He's earned that recognition through years of excellent performances, clear communication and an ability to let games flow.
But this was a tough watch.
Our referee ratings aren't simply about getting every decision right or wrong. We also consider game management, consistency, communication and the overall flow of the contest.
And on Friday night, things just didn't click.
The bizarre scrum confusion, constant interruptions and inconsistent scrutiny of incidents made for a frustrating evening.
Argentina's own discipline contributed to the disruption, and the wider officiating team must share responsibility for some of the confusion.
Final grade: D
