Fin Smith rejects 'other options' to sign new contract at Northampton Saints amid R360 speculation

The England fly-half, one of the country’s brightest young talents, has chosen to stay at Franklin’s Gardens — a decision driven in large part by his ambition to lead England into the next Rugby World Cup.

“There were other options for me to explore at the end of this contract cycle, but ultimately, staying in Northampton felt right,” Smith said. “A big goal I have for the next couple of years is to go to a World Cup. I’ve absolutely loved my time playing at No 10 for England through the Six Nations and the autumn before. That’s something I want to continue doing and a reason for me wanting to stay playing in the PREM.”

Smith’s rise has been rapid. Since taking over the No 10 shirt during the 2025 Six Nations, the 23-year-old has established himself as England’s first-choice fly-half, toured with the Lions in Australia, and become one of the most influential players in domestic rugby.

His success inevitably attracted attention. Organisers behind R360 — a planned rebel league set to launch in 2026 — had reportedly placed him at the top of their wish list. Newcastle Red Bulls, newly rebranded under their high-profile Austrian backers, were also keen to lure him north.

But Smith’s commitment to Northampton ends all that talk. By choosing the Saints, he’s also choosing England — with players who join R360 expected to be ineligible for national selection under current RFU rules.

Having joined Northampton following the collapse of his boyhood club Worcester, Smith has gone on to become one of the club’s key figures. He has already made 63 appearances, scored 589 points, and played a central role in the Saints’ 2023/24 Premiership triumph, as well as their run to the Investec Champions Cup final.

“I’ve loved my time at Saints so far and feel like I’ve developed massively as a person on and off the pitch,” said Smith, who has 11 England caps to his name. “I turned up as a 19-year-old, probably just happy to find a team after everything that happened at Worcester. I have to thank Northampton for helping me figure out who I want to be, how I want to play the game and what it means to play here. It’s shaped me in a big way.”

When he first arrived, Smith had the unenviable task of filling the boots of Welsh great Dan Biggar — a challenge he’s since embraced with composure and maturity beyond his years.

“I came here as a young boy who was just trying to find his feet, develop his style, and compete for the shirt,” he added. “Saints have elevated me towards those international honours and the Lions as well. I believe being in this environment gives me the best chance to reach my potential.”

Now an established international and a key figure for both club and country, Smith’s re-signing is a huge boost for Northampton — and a clear statement that he believes their best days are still ahead.

“As a club, we’re in a period where the core group have been together for a long time and I believe we can go on to be really successful.”
