Here’s a look at five players whose performances left much to be desired in the opening weekend.

Returning from Toulon, the England hooker had a mixed performance. He initially faltered with his lineout throws to the front and had to adjust by aiming further back, where he found more consistency. Singleton also found it difficult to break through Saracens’ defensive line, a struggle shared by Gloucester’s entire pack.

After talking up his return to the Premiership, Wade’s debut was underwhelming. He saw little of the ball and when he did, Saracens winger Rotimi Segun kept him well-contained.

Wade’s impact was limited in a performance that didn’t live up to his pre-season confidence.

Usually a livewire on the wing, Sleightholme had a surprisingly quiet game. The ball rarely came his way in attack, and he was substituted with nearly 30 minutes remaining.

His replacement, Tommy Freeman, another England hopeful, also struggled to make an impact.

Blamire’s struggles continued as Newcastle fell to Bristol, extending their winless run to 22 Premiership matches.

The lineout was shaky, and Blamire, once seen as a rising star, now looks short on confidence, far from the form that saw him score six tries in his first six England appearances.

Haydon-Wood’s high tackle and subsequent yellow card proved costly for Exeter, as Leicester capitalised to score the decisive try through Tommy Reffell.

Once considered a promising England prospect, Haydon-Wood now has plenty of work to do if he hopes to catch Steve Borthwick’s attention.
