Former All Blacks forward could play for England after Borthwick talks

The powerful forward has arrived in England to join Newcastle Red Bulls, giving him the opportunity to impress in the Prem ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Reports have linked Sotutu with discussions over a potential England switch, although the player previously clarified that he had not spoken directly to Borthwick.

“I can’t say I had a chat (with Borthwick), but my agent went to work and explored options.”

The distinction matters: the reported contact involved his representatives, rather than a confirmed face-to-face meeting between Sotutu and England’s head coach.

Sotutu has an England qualification route through his mother. However, any change of international allegiance would require World Rugby approval under its eligibility regulations.

His Newcastle move puts him in English domestic rugby, but neither an international switch nor an England call-up has been confirmed.

For Sotutu, the coming Prem season offers a chance to push his name into the selection conversation.

His powerful carrying and handling ability could make him an intriguing option for Borthwick, although England already have fierce competition across the back row.
