Former Ireland captain Rory Best returns to Ulster Rugby in new role

Ulster Rugby have confirmed that club legend and former Ireland captain Rory Best has been appointed as the province’s new General Manager, marking a major moment in the next chapter of Ulster’s history.

Best, who captained both Ulster and Ireland during a glittering playing career, returns to Affidea Stadium in a leadership capacity that will see him shape the future of the province both on and off the pitch.

A product of the Ulster Rugby pathway, Best made 219 appearances for the province between 2004 and 2019, leading with distinction and embodying the core values of commitment, integrity, and pride in the jersey. At international level, he earned 124 caps for Ireland, captaining the side to historic victories — including Grand Slam success in 2018.

Since retiring from professional rugby, Best has stayed close to leadership and business, most recently working with global insurance broker The Ardonagh Group, where he developed a reputation for his strategic vision and people-first approach.

In his new role, the former hooker will oversee professional rugby operations, player development, and performance pathways, bringing his wealth of experience and deep understanding of Ulster’s identity to the fore.

Ulster Rugby CEO Hugh McCaughey described the appointment as a defining moment for the province:

Best said he was honoured to return to the club where his career began:
