Former Saracens star explains reasons for early departure

The club announced yesterday that the former Saracens fly-half has chosen not to exercise the option in his contract for a third year as head coach.

Jackson, 50, has spent six years involved in Fijian rugby. After initially working as an assistant with the Drua, he stepped into the head coach role in 2025 when Mick Byrne joined the Fiji national set-up.

His decision makes him the fourth Super Rugby head coach set to depart at the end of the campaign, following Vern Cotter (Blues), Tana Umaga (Moana Pasifika) and Les Kiss (Reds).

The Drua take on the Brumbies this weekend as they aim to improve on their three wins so far this season. Those results leave them ninth on the table, though they remain within reach of the play-offs in a tightly contested competition.

Speaking after confirming his departure, Jackson began by acknowledging the support he has received during his time in Fiji.

"Yesterday made the announcement that I won't be taking up my last year in my contract. I first of all want to thank you guys, the media, I think you've done an amazing job in supporting myself and the club.

"Secondly, and most importantly, everyone involved in this country and this great team, from the staff, to the players, to our coaches, to everyone, I just want to say a massive thank you."

He reflected on the personal significance of his six-year stint with Fijian rugby, which included involvement beyond the Drua set-up.

"It's been six years of my life, not only with the Drua but with Flying Fijians in the World Cup. Fiji means everything to me, it means a lot to my family and to everything that I've been through in this wonderful country and this wonderful team."

Jackson admitted the decision to leave was emotional, but ultimately driven by a need to prioritise his family after years of commitment abroad.

"I will sorely miss it but I believe it's the right time for me to depart ways with this club that I love so much and so it's time to give back to my family. I have obviously given up a lot for them."

He added that both he and the club felt the timing was appropriate.

"It just seems the right time, I thank especially this club, for understanding where I'm at."

Despite stepping away, Jackson emphasised his lasting affection for the organisation and confidence in its future.

"I've got a lot of loloma [love] for everyone involved in this organisation and I know that it will continue to be a great club, great for the supporters and it's really important for me now to move on."

Turning his attention back to the remainder of the season, Jackson made it clear his focus is firmly on finishing strongly with the team.

"The rest of the year we've got six important games, starting with this one and the players have understood that and that's enough we need to say until we're playing finals footy at the end of the season. Vinaka [thank you]."
