General Election 2019: Politicians that played rugby

Andrew R T Davies: The Conservative leader in Wales is the National Assembly Rugby team’s chairman and was part of the side who have taken on the House of Commons at Cardiff Arms Park in what has been dubbed the ‘real’ England-Wales showdown.

Jacques Chirac: The former French President played second row and number 8 for Brive’s youth team and the Paris Institute for Political Studies. Shouldn’t be a surprise that a man nicknamed “le bulldozer” played in the pack.

US President Bill Clinton: Developed an interest in rugby in England, playing prop at Oxford. It has been claimed that he played at Little Rock RFC in Arkansas, but they deny this.

Gordon Brown: The ex-Labour Prime Minister was playing for Kirkcaldy High School in Fife at age 16 when he received a boot to the head that tore and detached his retina in his left eye. This injury nearly blinded him, but didn’t stop him from earning a Ph.D. in history from the University of Edinburgh or taking over the PM slot from Tony Blair.

Boris Johnson: The current Prime Minister played rugby in his Old Etonian School days and has since formed an unlikely bond with Wales prop Adam Jones who the Mayor of London describes as his favourite player.

US President George W Bush: Believe it or not, the once most powerful man in the world played full-back at Phillips Academy, an independent boarding school, and Yale University. And yes, that is him in the photograph grappling with an opponent.
