Hannah Botterman stood down with immediate effect

Botterman, a prop for Bristol Bears, needs a second operation on an ankle injury she suffered while on club duty in December.

Meanwhile, Saracens hooker Campbell is set to undergo knee surgery next week, having already missed England’s opening-round victory over Ireland at Allianz Stadium.

Botterman first earned an England call-up in 2017 following a standout season with Saracens, making her debut against Canada.

She went on to feature in the 2019 Super Series in San Diego and secured a full-time professional contract with the RFU for the 2019/20 season. That same year, she was part of England’s Grand Slam-winning Women’s Six Nations squad.

She was later selected for the delayed 2021 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, played in October and November 2022.

More recently, she was in the Red Roses squad for last year’s Six Nations and was included in England’s Women’s Rugby World Cup squad on home soil, starting in the final victory over Canada.

Speaking last week about Botterman's injury, Red Roses boss John Mitchell explained the reason behind her omission from the first round.

“She had her ankle mended in the pre-season. At the moment, mechanically it is not quite right. So we are getting it checked up.”

He added that she was unlikely to feature again during the tournament, though a return wasn't entirely ruled out.

“No, I’d say that she might even miss out on the tournament. Hope not, but it’s not looking good.”

Both Botterman and Campbell will continue their rehabilitation with their clubs, working closely with the Red Roses medical team.

Elsewhere, Alex Matthews is unavailable for this weekend’s match against Scotland after sustaining a shoulder injury in the opening win over Ireland.

In response to the injuries, Bristol Bears lock Delaney Burns and Saracens prop Liz Crake have been called up to the Red Roses squad as cover.
