"Huge flops" - The five worst PREM Rugby transfers from this season

Whether due to injuries, poor form, or difficulty adapting, several high-profile arrivals have failed to make the expected impact. Here, we examine five of the worst transfers and what went wrong this campaign.

While Liam Williams has enjoyed an outstanding career, his move to Newcastle Red Bulls simply didn’t work out. He managed just three appearances after joining early in the season before calling time on his career.

In March, following a persistent knee injury that troubled him during his short stint at the club, Williams announced his retirement from professional rugby.

It’s hard to place blame on the player, but ultimately the signing proved ineffective and, in hindsight, largely unnecessary.

In March 2025, it was confirmed that Marius Louw would join Sale Sharks on a two-year deal starting from the 2025-26 season. However, his impact so far has been underwhelming.

Despite being a powerful and experienced centre, having spent his entire career in South Africa with the Sharks before captaining the Lions, Louw has yet to truly deliver for Sale.

While he hasn’t been poor, he also hasn’t met expectations, and it is possible that adapting to life and rugby in the UK has played a role in his slow start.

Boeta Chamberlain joined the Bulls in July 2024, making his debut in the Currie Cup against Western Province.

A year later, in August 2025, he signed a one-year deal with Newcastle Red Bulls following the conclusion of the Currie Cup.

This appears to have been more of a short-term, stopgap signing as Newcastle looked to add depth. While Chamberlain showed some promise on paper, his performances have been largely underwhelming.

With the club aiming to build a stronger long-term squad, it would not be surprising to see him move on sooner rather than later.

Rob Russell emerged through the Leinster Rugby academy during the 2021-22 season and went on to earn his first senior contract in April 2023.

In 2025, he made the move to Gloucester ahead of the 2025-26 Premiership season. However, his time in England has been disrupted from the outset.

A calf injury during pre-season set him back early, and although he returned to action, he has struggled to build momentum. His most recent appearance saw him forced off after just 24 minutes against Leicester Tigers in December.

So far, injuries have prevented Russell from making any meaningful impact.

Ross Byrne arrived at Gloucester with significant expectations and reportedly on a substantial salary, but his performances have fallen well short.

Despite a strong pedigree, including international experience with Ireland and key contributions such as a decisive late penalty against Australia in 2022, Byrne has struggled to replicate that form at club level this season.

After a series of disappointing displays, he has been dropped in favour of Charlie Atkinson, cementing his place as the biggest flop on this list.

His move from Leinster, confirmed in February 2025, was expected to be a major signing, but it has yet to pay off.
