Joshua Kenny: Leinster's newest high-flyer is thriving in life after Ireland Sevens

Nine of those have come in the United Rugby Championship, leaving him level at the top of the competition scoring charts for the season, alongside Stormers back row Evan Roos and Connacht wrecking ball Sean Jansen.

It’s a remarkable rise for a player who, just months ago, was facing an uncertain future following the end of Ireland’s Sevens programme.

“I really enjoyed my time there,” he said. “It was amazing, some of the trips I got to go on.“ Kenny said, upon reflection of his time in the Sevens circuit. "To travel the world and play rugby at the same time was a really, really cool experience.

“Then, when it ended, there was a decision in our hands, whether we wanted to try and keep on playing or whether we were going to hang up the boots.”

Kenny chose to roll the dice—and Leinster have been reaping the rewards ever since. After forcing his way into the squad, he hasn’t looked back, delivering try-scoring performances with ruthless consistency.

“I’m just delighted I got the opportunity to prove myself with Leinster,” he says. “I just tried to keep things simple, moving on from the Sevens. I know I’m quite lucky to have got the opportunity. I didn’t get to do all of the Academy years, but I’m still young enough to see that pathway for growth.”

His Sevens background has clearly sharpened his edge. His clinical fishing has made the 22-year-old one of the URC's most discussed danger-men, with an Ireland XVs call-up surely in his future before too long.

“I think the main thing it taught me was the pressure on each moment and your clarity of thinking in each moment,” he says.

With Leinster pushing for silverware and a crunch clash with Ulster Rugby looming, Kenny’s finishing touch could yet prove decisive in the weeks ahead.
