Ireland player ratings vs France as Andy Farrell's men were comprehensively beaten in the 2026 Six Nations opener in Paris.

France laid the foundations for a statement Six Nations opening win with a ruthless first-half display at the Stade de France, cruising past Ireland 36–14.

Fabien Galthié’s side ran in five tries, with Louis Bielle-Biarrey continuing his remarkable form by scoring twice. The wing opened the tournament scoring after 14 minutes, cutting through Irish defenders before Thomas Ramos added the conversion. France tightened their grip as Matthieu Jalibert and Charles Ollivon crossed before the break, giving Les Bleus a commanding 22–0 lead.

Bielle-Biarrey struck again early in the second half after a moment of brilliance from Ramos, securing the bonus point. Ireland, under Andy Farrell, responded with tries from Nick Timoney and Michael Milne, but France had the final say as Théo Attissogbe sealed an emphatic opening-round victory.

15. Jamie Osborne – 6.5 (OFF 73)

Delivered a great kick to touch after five minutes to pin France back. Confident to pin back the ears and return kicks from the backfield. Showed some instinctual play from fullback, yet also missed a couple of tackles. Switched out to the right wing as Jack Crowley replaced Tommy O’Brien.

14. Tommy O’Brien – 5.5 (OFF 49)

Missed his early hit on Thomas Ramos, which spurred the opening attack to the Ireland try-line. Almost gathered a nice chip into the backfield after Prendergast found him out wide with his educated feet. Jalibert skipped past O’Brien as he extended France’s first-half lead at 22 minutes. Replaced early in the second half by Jack Crowley.

13. Garry Ringrose – 6

Not the starring first half the Leinster man would have hoped for, but he was a presence at the gain line. France had done their homework on the midfield, with Ringrose rarely given space to make yards. Needed to find an extra gear in attack, as France consistently had an answer for him.

12. Stuart McCloskey – 7.5

Given the nod at centre with Bundee Aki serving a three-match ban. Looked sharp on the front foot, yet was undone at times by the fearsome tempo of the French back line. Disrupted the French attack at 55 minutes to force a brief turnover for a second-half highlight, before playing in his Ulster teammate for a try with a neat offload. Looked to be Ireland’s top performer for long periods of the opening clash.

11. Jacob Stockdale – 6.5

The in-form Ulster flyer has been paramount for his province this season. However, an early missed step saw him evaded by Bielle-Biarrey down the wing for the opening try. Made up for it with some strong tackling in the second half, including a stand-out hit that sent the flying Frenchman into touch.

10. Sam Prendergast – 6

Made a pivotal disruption on France’s initial attack to deny a try by the faintest of touches. Delivered some nice kick passes out wide, yet an unorthodox clearance kick proved costly as he missed his tackle on Bielle-Biarrey for the opening score.

Intercepted the ball and carried it over his own line instead of clearing the danger. Prendergast then missed his tackle on Matthieu Jalibert, as his opposite number waltzed in for France’s second try. Turned his fortunes around with a nice carry in the build-up to Timoney’s try.

9. Jamison Gibson-Park – 6.5

Straight in with the box kicks to get the ball into French territory. Peppered the French backfield with the high ball as Ireland tried their luck in the skies. Sent backwards in contact by a bulldozing Depoortere carry midway through the first half.

1. Jeremy Loughman – 7 (OFF 59)

Out to make his mark after injured Leinster loose-heads opened the door. The first-half scrum was an even affair, with the inexperienced international holding firm against veteran Test tight-head Dorian Aldegheri.

2. Dan Sheehan – 7 (OFF 59)

Line-outs went comfortably to hand, shaking off any pre-match nerves and lingering doubts from the Autumn. Instigated the maul offence, though France had an answer in close-quarter contests during the first half.

3. Thomas Clarkson – 6.5 (OFF 59)

Given the nod at tight-head with Tadhg Furlong not cleared from a calf injury. Offered plenty as a carrier and acted as a useful dummy runner. Like Loughman, was steady at scrum time but came undone by France’s fearsome attacking pace.

4. Joe McCarthy – 5 (OFF 49)

Returned with some set-piece success, but conceded a needless penalty at a dangerous area by flying into the side of a ruck, allowing Ramos to slot an easy three. A midfield pass later slipped through his legs, summing up a difficult first half.

5. Tadhg Beirne – 7.5

A solid aerial presence from the off alongside McCarthy. Unlucky to juggle the ball forward at the 11th minute as Ireland built pressure. Chopped hard in contact, but also fell victim to France’s breathtaking tempo. Lost the first line-out of the second half but made amends with a clever pop pass to Michael Milne for Ireland’s second try.

6. Cian Prendergast – 6 (OFF 49)

Involved throughout, as the Connacht man brought tireless energy. Fell off the last-ditch tackle on Jalibert’s try after O’Brien and his brother Sam missed their hits on the Bordeaux fly-half. Started the second half strongly, turning over a maul to halt a French threat.

7. Josh van der Flier – 7 (OFF 49)

Knocked on early as conditions took hold. Remained a solid threat on the front foot, linking forwards and backs with neat touches. Strong carries and an impressive work rate around the breakdown.

8. Caelan Doris (C) – 6.5

Missed an early tackle as Ramos returned a kick, but quickly settled. Racked up an impressive tackle count in Paris. Fell just short of stopping Charles Ollivon as the French lock crossed for the third try.

16. Rónan Kelleher – 6 (ON 59)

Took over set-piece duties with some favourable bounces going Ireland’s way. Not as sharp as Sheehan at line-out time but held his own in the scrum.

17. Michael Milne – 7 (ON 59)

Powered over for Ireland’s second try with an unstoppable close-range carry. Made good use of his opportunity at Test level as Ireland improved in the second half.

18. Finlay Bealham – 6.5 (ON 59)

Came on for an important final half hour as Ireland rallied up front. Carried well into French traffic and helped steady the set-piece.

19. James Ryan – 6.5 (ON 49)

Replaced McCarthy to shore up a line-out that had begun to falter. Provided calm leadership as Farrell’s men clawed their way back into the contest.

20. Jack Conan – 6.5 (ON 49)

Brought his usual physical carries and defensive grit. Ireland’s second-half defensive improvement owed much to his contribution, though some carries were predictable and he was driven back at close range.

21. Nick Timoney – 7.5 (ON 49)

Exploded off the bench in place of Cian Prendergast. Pounced on a loose ball and made a strong break at 57 minutes to lift the Irish support. Scored a well-taken try in support of McCloskey and looks deserving of a start against Italy next weekend.

22. Craig Casey – 5 (ON 73)

A frustrating evening watching from the sidelines as Gibson-Park controlled proceedings. Replaced Jamie Osborne for a brief seven-minute cameo on the wing.

23. Jack Crowley – 7 (ON 49)

Showcased his versatility from the bench, operating at fullback as the back three was reshuffled. Attempted a clever grubber behind the French line and stepped into first receiver to ignite the move for Timoney’s try.
