South Africa No.8 Jasper Wiese has been slapped with a four-match suspension following a disciplinary hearing for the red card he received in the Springboks’ 45-0 demolition of Italy.

The Leicester Tigers powerhouse will miss the final match of the Incoming Series against Georgia this Saturday in Nelspruit, as well as the opening three clashes of the Rugby Championship.

That includes back-to-back Tests against Australia in Johannesburg and Cape Town (16 & 23 August), followed by the first battle against the All Blacks in Auckland on 6 September.

He’ll be back in the selection mix for the second New Zealand Test in Wellington (13 September) and the final two Championship fixtures against Argentina in Durban and London (27 September & 4 October).

World Rugby confirmed the details of the suspension following a disciplinary process that involved both the Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) and a full Disciplinary Committee (DC) hearing.

FPRC Review: Chaired by Roddy Dunlop KC, with ex-Wales internationals Jamie Corsi and Olly Kohn, the FPRC initially reviewed the red card under the new expedited off-field sanction process.
After reviewing written submissions, the panel referred the case for a full disciplinary hearing.
DC Hearing (15 July): Chaired by Rhian Williams (Wales), alongside former officials Donal Courtney (Ireland) and Valeriu Tomu (Romania).

Wiese accepted that foul play occurred, but contested that the incident warranted a red card. However, the DC upheld the sending off – and escalated the charge to Law 9.12 (striking with the head), upgrading it from Law 9.11 (reckless/dangerous play).

The disciplinary panel deemed the incident a low-end offence, warranting a six-match entry point, reduced to four due to mitigating factors.
