The 42-year-old, who officially retired from professional rugby in 2025, was named in the Men’s 1XV squad and took to the field at Glasshouse Lane—giving local supporters a rare chance to watch a player of genuine top-flight pedigree in grassroots action.
Gopperth brought the curtain down on a remarkable career that spanned over 500 senior games across New Zealand and Europe. He first made his name in England with Newcastle Falcons, before enjoying trophy-laden success with Leinster Rugby, where he lifted the Pro12 title and European Challenge Cup.
A move to Wasps RFC followed, where he became one of the Premiership’s most consistent performers and a key leader during their run to the 2017 final. He later added further experience with spells at Worcester Warriors and Leicester Tigers, cementing his reputation as one of the most reliable fly-halves of his generation.
Since retiring in 2025, Gopperth has begun transitioning into coaching, with ambitions to develop young players and remain involved in the game off the pitch. His appearance for Kenilworth was not a full comeback, but rather a one-off driven by his ongoing love for rugby and connection to the local club.
Even in a grassroots setting, Gopperth’s presence drew plenty of attention—and served as a reminder of the enduring quality that defined his career.
