Joe Marler has finally lifted the lid on the
real reason he walked away from rugby in November 2024 — admitting his body and mind simply had nothing left to give.
Speaking openly on The Stick to Rugby Podcast, the Harlequins and England icon revealed the truth behind his early exit and why he decided to pull the plug months before supporters expected.
? “We got pumped” – the moment it clicked
Marler’s final outing came in a bruising defeat to Bristol Bears at The Stoop — and he says that match told him everything he needed to know.
“Bristol Bears at home. We got pumped. I think it shocked a lot of people, because Quins fans might’ve thought,
‘Well, at least he might finish at the end of the season.’
But I said no. I’m done. And that’s it.”
The loss didn’t just sting — it confirmed the end was already here.
? “My mind had gone” – the brutal truth
Marler has been candid in the past about his mental health battles, but this time the issues were twofold: the physical grind and the mental toll.
“I couldn’t go on. I couldn’t even do the next few months. My body was struggling, the speed of the game was getting too quick — and heavy — for me.
Also, my mind had gone.”
The 34-year-old admitted that the internal fire that once fuelled him had dimmed — and it wasn’t Quins that drove him anymore.
“It wasn’t that I wasn’t trying or anything for Quins, but my biggest motivation was playing for England.
And when I made that decision [to retire from England], it was inevitable that the feeling for Quins was going to go with it.”
? Marler’s legacy
A cult hero with 95 England caps, a World Cup final appearance in 2019, and over a decade of service to Harlequins — including two Premiership titles — Marler leaves behind a career few can match.
Fans may have hoped for one last run through to the end of the 2024/25 campaign, but the honesty behind his exit will only strengthen the respect he commands across the rugby world.
