Springboks star Damian Willemse faces a major decision over his future, with the double World Cup winner attracting serious interest from Japan.
The 28-year-old is entering the final months of his contract with the Stormers, which expires in June 2027.
Willemse has spent almost his entire professional career in Cape Town, but a lucrative offer from overseas could tempt him into a new challenge.
According to South African newspaper Rapport, Japanese giants Suntory Sungoliath are keen to secure his signature.
The Stormers are determined to keep him, setting up a battle for one of South African rugby's most versatile players.
Stormers fighting to keep Damian Willemse
Willemse signed a five-year contract extension in 2022, committing himself to the Stormers until after the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
However, talks over a fresh deal have already started.
Reports suggest the Stormers have begun negotiations, with broad terms and financial details agreed in principle.
That could give the South African side an advantage, although no new contract has been announced.
Suntory Sungoliath are reportedly prepared to offer significant money to bring Willemse to Japan.
The Tokyo-based club have a history of attracting some of rugby's biggest names.
Former All Blacks captain Sam Cane and Ireland winger James Lowe are among their high-profile signings.
Fellow Springboks star Cheslin Kolbe also spent three years with Suntory before returning to the Stormers in 2026.
Another Springboks star facing uncertain future
Willemse is not the only South African international attracting interest from Japan.
Springboks fly-half Handre Pollard is also reportedly being pursued by a Japanese club, with the Bulls hoping to keep him beyond the current season.
Meanwhile, hooker Malcolm Marx recently confirmed his departure from Kubota Spears when his contract expires in June 2027.
The 32-year-old cited family reasons for his decision and confirmed he would return to South Africa.
The Bulls have been strongly linked with his signature, although his next club has not been officially announced.
For Willemse, any potential move would likely come after next year's World Cup in Australia.
The versatile back has won two World Cups with South Africa and remains an important member of Rassie Erasmus's squad.
He has also made more than 100 appearances for the Stormers since making his debut as an 18-year-old in 2017.
For now, his future remains unresolved, with the Stormers hoping to convince him to stay in Cape Town.
