"Keyboard Warriors" - Andy Farrell hits back at Sam Prendergast and Jack Crowley's online critics

Prendergast was picked to start at fly half for the second round of the Six Nations, despite putting in a sub-par performance against France the week prior. The decision brought about harsh criticism from Ireland fans, who were eager to see Jack Crowley back in the starting XV. Farrell expressed how he is frustrated with the state of the online discourse, as the constant criticism can have a grating impact upon the 23-year-old Prendergast and 26-year-old Crowley.

“Do you know what, I might be talking out of school here, but in my opinion for what’s gone on over the last year, especially with the keyboard warriors, I think people need to ask themselves, really, sometimes, ‘Are we Irish?’" Farrell stated at the Aviva Stadium

"Do we want people to do well or not? Because it can be tough for these kids. I’ve seen it, to-ing and fro-ing with both of them [Prendergast and Crowley], and both of them are strong characters. It takes a lot to break kids like that. But I’ve seen it affect people. So the keyboard warriors on Twitter, or whatever you call it now, need to cop on and try and help these kids."

In what would have been the opportune time for Prendergast to lay down a marker with a solid performance, the Leinster out-half unfortunately struggled to click into his top gear throughout the latest clash with the Azzurri. Prendergast was a step away from his best, as he struggled upon the defensive foot and also missed two missed conversions, which then garnered a considerable groan from the crowd.

“I’ve missed worse than that, and I’ve had worse groans that that, believe me. Everyone is allowed to do that." Farrell said, when the head coach was asked about the crowd's response. "They're young lads and good lads as well. We need to back them."

Farrell shared how Prendergast was 'frustrated' with elements of his performance against Italy. However, the head coach was quick to recognise how such Test matches will one day be the making of the young players, as they grow into their international careers.

"He'd [Prendergast] be frustrated with bits. These things will stand to them as in, that's the journey. That's the career. Down the line, these two lads [Prendergast and Crowley], and others, they will be the players that they want to be. Everyone goes through these types of scenarios."

Mid-way through the second half at the Aviva Stadium, Farrell made the call to withdraw Prendergast in a straight swap for Crowley. This was a change of tactic to that of the trip to France, which saw Crowley unleashed at fullback, to play in the back-line alongside the Leinster man.

There was an undeniable roar from the Ireland fans once the substitution was made, with Farrell quick to dismiss the cheer being that of in favour of Prendergast's exit. The head coach shared how he thought the fans were excited to see Crowley enter the fray, with a sizeable Munster fan base in attendance.

“No, I don’t believe that [Ireland fans cheered to see Prendergast replaced]. No. You’re making that up. 100 per cent. I heard the cheer for Jack. That’s for Jack. Jack’s a good lad, you know? He’s a good player. And Munster supporters and Irish supporters are allowed to cheer that, like. You know what I mean? We don’t need to make it out to be something it’s not."

Looking ahead to the third round of the 2026 Six Nations, and Ireland are back on the road with an away trip to face England at Twickenham. Farrell was quizzed upon whether the impressive replacement efforts from Crowley could have swayed the Munster out-half into favour for a return to the starting XV, yet the head coach kept his cards to his chest for the time being.

"We'll see, we'll see, but Jack did pretty well didn't he? I said to him... he's gutted about the kick into the corner obviously but he did a lot more than that for us. He did a lot more good for us than harm and he can be proud of his performance today."
