LIST | 5 players you forgot made Stuart Lancaster's World Cup training squad in 2015

Everybody remembers the high-profile omissions with Danny Cipriani and Luther Burrell being dumped on the eve of the tournament.

However, there were some players involved in the build-up that you might not remember.

What a disaster for Lancaster. He had a world-class player in his hands who ready to take the world by storm, but instead he opted for out-of-form, injury-prone Geoff Parling. After not being given an opportunity by Lancaster, he'd make his debut under Eddie Jones in the 2016 Six Nations, and, yeah, he's now arguably the best player in the world.

I'm not sure if this is a fact, but the versatile forward must be close to to earning the most England call-ups (6) without winning a cap. Very unlucky not to make his debut, although he did captain England against the Canterbury Crusaders in a non-cap match. Just generally forgot he was in the original training squad.

After finishing the 2011 World Cup as top-scorer, it seemed like the Saracens winger would be a guaranteed starter for England in 2015. However, the box-office winger was unceremoniously dropped from the squad some 6 weeks before the tournament. That season Ashton had scored more Premiership tries than selected Anthony Watson, Jack Nowell and Jonny May combined. Baffling from Lancaster.

Seeing the likes of Matt Kvesic dumped in favour of Clark - one of the most hated players in the world at the time - was strange. The flanker would win a cap in a warm-up match against France, but that would be that for his uninteresting international career.

People have defended Lancaster since his disastrous Rugby World Cup, but we'd like to politely remind everyone that he omitted one of the most exciting wingers on the planet in Christian Wade in favour of a washed up 31-year-old. Strettle, who hadn't played for England since the second-string tour of Argentina in June 2013, never had a chance of making the final squad. Baffling.
