What do you expect to see when you watch a rugby match? Tries? Some full-blooded tackles? Maybe a card or two? That all seems perfectly reasonable.
Every now and then, though, something happens on the pitch that nobody could have predicted. Here are five of the funniest incidents ever to take place inside a beautiful game of two halves.
1. Phil Vickery
"Wasps were playing Newcastle at Adams Park, just after the 2007 World Cup. This young lad, a back-rower, was calling me fat this and fat that, all the usual stuff. He kept on and on.
"It got to the point, we were stood at a lineout and he was still going on. I said, “For f**k’s sake, if I knew your name I’d give you some banter back!” His team wet themselves. But I genuinely didn’t know who he was!"
2. Henry Slade
"There was a guy who used to play for Exeter who didn’t wear pants under his shorts and once, in a maul, his shorts got pulled down so his pride and joy was hanging out. I’m not naming names."
3. Donncha O'Callaghan
94 Ireland caps, four Lions test appearances on two separate tours, two Heineken Cups and one Grand Slam yet Donncha O'Callaghan is still remembered as the player who lost his shorts.
4. Jacob Stockdale
"Against Edinburgh last season I got my shorts and boxers pulled down in a tackle. Luckily I kept the front up but my bum was on show for a good ten seconds on BBC2, so I wasn’t too happy about that. One of my housemates had it as his profile pic on Facebook for a bit!"
5. Martin Johnson
"Back in the amateur days, Leicester were playing a cup semi-final at London Irish. Over the Tannoy came one of those announcements, “Would the owner of the Volvo, registration blah blah, please move it, you’re blocking the ambulance.” At which point their tighthead, Gary Halpin, went “That’s my car!” and left us there for three minutes while he went to sort it out."
