The verdict is out on South Africa lock Eben Etzebeth, following the eye gouging incident against Wales in the final weekend of the Quliter Nations Series. The Sharks man faces a lengthy spell on the side-lines, with a 12-match ban keeping him off the pitch until the end of March 2026.

Etzebeth was dismissed with a straight red card during the Springboks clash with Wales on 22nd November 2025, under Law 9.12 – acts of foul play, including contact with the eye area. The Springbok enforcer made the offense against Wales back row Alex Mann, in the closing minutes of the 73-0 win.

Etzebeth appeared via video link at his disciplinary hearing earlier this week. The committee, chaired by Christopher Quinlan KC alongside for international players Leon Lloyd and Becky Essex, reviewed multiple camera angles and all submissions before concluding that Etzebeth’s actions met the threshold for intentional contact. That prompted a mid-range entry point of 18 weeks.

However, the panel acknowledged several mitigating factors, including Etzebeth’s disciplinary record and conduct during the process, reducing the sanction by six weeks to a final suspension of 12 matches. World Rugby’s framework allowed no scope for a lower entry point given the nature of the offence, and the ruling means the Sharks will be without one of their most influential forwards for a significant stretch of the Champions Cup and United Rugby Championship calendar.
