The electric Springbok scrumhalf, whose deal runs out in June, is set to take up a new challenge in Japan.
Williams’ exit comes at a delicate point for the Durban outfit, who are deep into a rebuilding phase under fresh leadership. His influence in the No. 9 jersey has been significant, and replacing that spark won’t be straightforward.
As it stands, the responsibility is expected to fall on Jaden Hendrikse and Ross Braude, who are likely to steer the position moving forward.
Crucially, the move to Japan is not expected to affect Williams’ international prospects. Rassie Erasmus has repeatedly shown he is willing to select overseas-based players, including those in Japan and Europe, for the Springboks.
Now 29, Williams has become one of the Boks’ most trusted scrumhalves, featuring in 11 of their 14 Tests over the past year.
Earlier reports suggested the move had been in the works for some time, with Williams already visiting Japan to acclimatise ahead of his switch.
