"New stars" - Sir Clive Woodward names two England players in his five Six Nations players to watch

Looking ahead to the tournament, he wrote: "It was interesting to read last week about the 50th anniversary of Sir Gareth Edwards’ famous Barbarians try against New Zealand. We’re still talking about it half a century later.

"The challenge I’d like to lay down to the players taking the field this year is to produce something equally as memorable and which will be part of rugby folklore forever, in the same way Edwards’ try is and always will be.

"Everyone involved in this Six Nations must recognise they have a responsibility to deliver a product rugby can be proud of."

He then said: "I want to see new players step forward." before name checking five potential stars for the 2023 Six Nations.

Club: Ospreys

Morgan first played rugby at local club Cwmtwrch – before gravitating to the Scarlets Academy. He also played for Aberavon in the Welsh Premiership and did a mechanical engineering apprenticeship while simultaneously becoming a professional rugby player.

After playing for Scarlets from 2019 to 2021, he joined Ospreys in the summer of 2021.

Morgan can play effectively across the back row .

In the 2019-20 Six Nations Under 20s Championship he captained Wales and achieved more turnovers than any other player in this tournament. He was called up to the senior Wales squad for the 2022 Six Nations Championship and made his debut in the second round of matches in Wales’ 20-17 victory over Scotland.

Club: Leinster

From Ireland, Woodward suggested keeping an eye on this Six Nations is back-row Doris, who was exceptional during the autumn.

Indeed, Doris would end up missing the 2021 Six Nations due to a recurrence of concussion, ultimately taking an extended break from the sport.

Such a scenario saw him miss out on potential Lions selection, while he returned in the summer of 2021 for Tests vs the USA and Japan in Dublin.

He's since gone onto establish himself as a key figure in Andy Farrell's back-row.

Smith's rapid rise shows no signs of slowing down – it took barely a year for him to go from captaining Brighton College in an unbeaten season to involvement in the senior England squad.Marcus became the second-youngest Premiership debutant in history, behind George Ford, when making his Harlequins bow against London Irish aged 18 years and 200 days in September 2017.

The fly-half made 28 appearances for Harlequins in all competitions during the 2017/18 season, scoring three tries on his way to 208 points.

He was named as an apprentice in the England party for the Old Mutual Wealth series that autumn and continued in that role during the 2018 NatWest Six Nations.

Smith made his Test debut in 2021 against the USA and contributed 13 points, including a try, to their 43-19 victory. In 2021 he was called up to the British & Irish Lions squad and kicked all seven conversions in their game against the Stormers.

Steve Borthwick named Smith in his squad for the 2023 Guinness Six Nations Championship.

Hassell-Collins represented England at U18s and U20s levels and competed in the 2019 Six Nations Under 20s Championship.

He also featured in the England Sevens team at the 2019 Paris Sevens.His rugby journey began at a young age, playing club rugby for Newbury RFC prior to joining the London Irish Academy at 16.

The speedster made his debut in the Championship against the Cornish Pirates, before playing in the top flight of English rugby when the Exiles were promoted a year later.

Steve Borthwick named Hassell-Collins in his squad for the 2023 Guinness Six Nations.

Since a 2014 debut against USA in Houston,Russell has established himself as one of the most charismatic and exciting playmakers in world rugby, his ability to find space when it seemingly doesn’t exist a hallmark of his maverick playing style.

In 2013, Russell spent 15 weeks in New Zealand as part of the John Macphail scholarship, honing skills that, alongside club experience with Stirling County, Falkirk and Ayr, would help him become a key part of the Glasgow Warriors squad that tasted PRO12 glory in 2015, the same year he featured in his first Rugby World Cup.

A move to French giants Racing 92 followed in 2018 and, after winning a 50^th cap for Scotland against Georgia at the tail end of 2020, the talismanic Russell was called up to the 2021 British & Irish Lions squad (he also featured on the 2017 tour) where he went on to earn a first Lions cap in the third Test against South Africa, kicking 11 points in their narrow, series-defining loss against the world champions.
