New Zealand NPC: Round 4 - Waikato snatch Ranfurly Shield from Taranaki

Tasman and Northland both racked up big away victories, while Otago powered past Counties Manukau under the roof in Dunedin. To close the weekend, Manawatū lit up Palmerston North with an attacking showcase against Wellington. Here’s how the action unfolded.

Bay of Plenty dominated the opening half-hour in Rotorua, forcing Southland onto the back foot with constant possession and territory. Their persistence was rewarded when Number Eight Nikora Broughton made a strong surge, setting up prop Josh Bartlett for the game’s first try. Moments later, fullback Kaleb Trask threatened to extend the lead, only for Southland’s Michael Manson to read his wide pass and intercept to relieve pressure.

The Steamers thought they had doubled their tally when flanker Veveni Lasaqa powered over before halftime, but the ball spilled forward in contact. Southland’s only reply in the half came via two penalty goals from fly-half Mika Muliaina, leaving Bay narrowly ahead 7–6 at the break. Southland struck quickly after halftime as No8 Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa’s burst created space for halfback Nic Shearer to score. Bay responded with tries to Ngarohi McGarvey-Black and Trask, the latter benefiting from a quick throw.

Southland’s rolling maul delivered a try for hooker Nic Souchon, and replacement Byron Smith’s accurate boot nudged them ahead. With time running out, Smith linked with Manson, who broke through tired defence in the 79th minute to seal Southland’s famous away win.

Canterbury showed why they sit top of the NPC with a composed and clinical win over Hawke’s Bay in Napier. The visitors began strongly, using their set-piece to build pressure. A lineout variation in the seventh minute gave flanker Corey Kellow the space to charge through for the opener. Hawke’s Bay defended stoutly but struggled to find territory, and Canterbury’s second try arrived from another well-executed set move. This time, quick recycling and a long pass freed wing Manasa Mataele to dive over out wide for a 12–0 halftime advantage.

The Magpies looked to respond after the break, trapping Canterbury in their own in-goal, but they failed to convert the chance. The introduction of Folau Fakatava briefly lifted the home side, his sharp service putting flanker Miracle Fai’ilagi over in the 54th minute to close the gap. However, Canterbury struck straight back. Wing Chay Fihaki punished a dropped pass, linking with Braydon Ennor to score a length-of-the-field try. Fullback Johnny McNicholl then sealed the bonus-point victory with a smart blindside run, leaving Hawke’s Bay to rue missed chances.

Waikato lifted the Ranfurly Shield with a dramatic one-point win over Taranaki in New Plymouth. The match opened with tension as Taranaki lock Jesse Parete was sin-binned for a high tackle, allowing Aaron Cruden to edge Waikato ahead with a penalty. The home side responded through centre Josh Setu, who finished well after slick build-up play for a 5–3 halftime lead.

Taranaki extended their advantage early in the second half with a sweeping move down the right wing that put halfback Logan Crowley in for their second try. Waikato clawed back through Cruden’s boot before centre Obey Samate pounced on a loose ball to score. Flanker Dylan Eti added another from a rolling maul to swing momentum. Yet Taranaki wouldn’t fold, fly-half Josh Jacomb kicked a penalty and converted his own try to restore a nine-point cushion entering the final quarter.

Waikato’s bench then had the final say, as halfback Xavier Roe darted over before Lima Sopoaga calmly nailed a last-minute penalty under pressure to seal a famous Shield win.

Tasman stormed to a commanding win over North Harbour thanks to a first-half blitz in Albany. Straight from the kick-off, flanker Tayne Hemopo muscled over to open the scoring. Wing Macca Springer then stole the show, crossing four times in a remarkable display. His first came after Kyren Taumoepolau’s incisive break, and by the 24th minute, he had completed a hat-trick with pace and precision. Hooker Tomasi Maka also powered over, giving the visitors an unassailable 31–0 halftime lead.

North Harbour finally found joy in the second half through their scrum, halfback Siaosi Nginingini darting over from close range. But Tasman’s forwards and Springer's finishing kept them in control, with lock Hunter Leppien adding another try before Springer claimed his fourth. Late substitutions allowed Harbour some consolation, as Tom Barham finished strongly and replacement hooker Penaia Cakobau stunned the crowd with a dazzling 45-metre solo effort. Despite that, Tasman’s dominance never wavered as they banked maximum points away from home.

Northland stunned Auckland at Eden Park with a high-tempo attacking performance that left the home side chasing throughout. Early on, Auckland squandered two golden chances, with Codemeru Vai and Xavier Tito-Harris both denied within metres of the line.

Northland capitalised ruthlessly when lock Allan Craig hacked a rebound into space and set up Reesjan Pasitoa for the opener. Halfback Sam Nock darted over soon after, and Pasitoa’s second extended the lead. Craig was rewarded for his industry with a try of his own, giving Northland a 26–5 halftime advantage after Tito-Harris grabbed Auckland’s only points.

The hosts mounted a response after the break. Lock Josh Beehre finished from a driving maul before Tito-Harris latched onto a kick to score his second. However, Northland’s accuracy on attack kept them in charge. Fly-half Rivez Reihana dictated play with a try, five conversions, and a penalty for an 18-point haul. Centre Xavi Taele gave Auckland a glimmer of hope, but replacement Nathan Salmon’s late strike sealed a landmark away victory for the Taniwha.

Otago claimed a deserved win under the roof in Dunedin, outmuscling Counties Manukau with smart set-piece execution and clinical finishing. Fullback Sam Gilbert struck first after joining the line in the eighth minute. Counties hit back almost immediately, Simon-Peter Toleafoa charging down Jona Nareki’s clearance to score. Hooker Henry Bell then made his presence felt at lineouts, throwing accurately for Tucker and Nareki to score as Otago surged 19–5 ahead. A determined surge from Hoskins Sotutu before halftime set up prop Keran van Staden to cut the gap to seven.

The second half belonged to Otago’s back row. No8 Christian Lio-Willie carried strongly, combining twice with Nareki to unleash halfback Dylan Pledger and fly-half Cam Millar for further tries. Millar’s control from first five kept the hosts organised, stretching the lead to 33–12. Counties found some late resistance through replacement back Gibson Popoali’i, who powered over, but it was too little, too late as Otago comfortably closed out the contest to keep pace near the top of the standings.

Manawatū thrilled their home crowd with an attacking masterclass against Wellington. Flanker TK Howden opened the scoring after 16 minutes, finishing a flowing move. Five minutes later, Ngane Laumape’s footwork created space for wing James Tofa to dive over. Wellington responded through fullback Stanley Solomon, who showed his pace to score in the corner. That left Manawatū leading 14–7 at the interval.

The Turbos struck straight after the restart as fullback Drew Wild took a quick throw and linked brilliantly with Tofa, who kicked ahead and regathered for his second. Solomon replied with his own double after latching onto a kick from Jackson Garden-Bachop, but Manawatū’s backline speed proved decisive. Wild’s dazzling run teed up Taniela Filimone for two tries in quick succession, before Tofa claimed his hat-trick with a bouncing ball finish. Wellington staged a late rally with Solomon completing his hat-trick and Losi Filipo crossing, but the damage was already done. Manawatū secured a bonus-point win and significant momentum in their campaign.
