The Scotland and British & Irish Lions centre previously made 104 appearances during his first spell in the North East before departing for Gloucester Rugby in 2019. He went on to play more than a century of games for the Cherry and Whites, before a move to Bath Rugby last summer.
Capped 47 times by Scotland and a Test starter for the Lions in South Africa, the 35-year-old described his return as a “full-circle moment”.
“It’s a real full-circle moment to be heading back to Kingston Park,” said Harris.
“I am looking forward to returning to where it all started, helping to galvanise this new group of exciting players as we build for the future.”
The 6ft 2in centre, who was born in Carlisle, was a late developer in professional rugby. He featured for Carlisle, Northumbria University and Tynedale before making his Newcastle debut as a 23-year-old in 2014.
“Newcastle is home to me, and I owe so much to this club,” he added.
“I can’t wait to bring my experience, on and off the field, and pull on the shirt once again.
“There’s a clear vision at Newcastle Red Bulls, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this new chapter for the club.”
