Newcastle have officially re-branded from the Falcons, following their high-profile summer takeover by energy drink giant Red Bull. Red Bull’s sporting empire stretches from extreme sports to Formula 1, as well as football clubs in Salzburg, Leipzig, New York, Liefering, Bragança Paulista and Omiya-ku. They also hold minority stakes in Leeds United and Paris FC, further underlining their global reach.
The new identity was unvailed today across Newcastle Red Bulls' social media channels, and will be on show for the first time in the Premiership Rugby Cup opener against Harlequins this Friday. The Red Bulls launch their PREM league campaign at home to Saracens, whom Newcastle famously toppled at Kingston Park last season.
Recruitment has been equally high-octane. Christian Wade arrives from Wigan Warriors as he completes a code-switch back from rugby league. Wade arrives alongside South African fly-half Boeta Chamberlain, Australian lock Fergus Lee-Warner, Kiwi flanker Tom Christie, Argentina’s Simon Benitez Cruz, Japan back-rower Amanaki Mafi, Scotland lock Jamie Hodgson, and ex-Gloucester duo Freddie Clarke and George McGuigan.
Head coach Steve Diamond welcomed the takeover, saying: “It’s a brilliant endorsement of rugby up here in the north. It just shows great continuity of the rugby club which has been going for over 100 years. Now it’s down to Red Bull to carry the flag for rugby in the north east for Newcastle.”
