England superstar Owen Farrell didn’t hesitate when asked to name the toughest opponent he’s ever faced — and the answer won’t surprise many rugby fans.

Speaking with David Flatman, the Saracens and former England captain admitted that legendary fly-half Jonny Wilkinson stands alone as the most formidable rival of his career.

“There are so many,” said Farrell. “It would have to be Jonny (Wilkinson), simple as that.”

“The consistency he showed throughout his career was incredible — he set a new standard for fly-halves all over the world. Dan Carter is another one who has been incredible over a long period, but I’d have to stick with Jonny as my toughest opponent.”

Early Battles in Europe

Farrell came up against Wilkinson early in his career when Saracens met Toulon in the Heineken Champions Cup. Wilkinson, then leading the star-studded French giants, was at the peak of his powers — and Farrell admits it was a masterclass in control, kicking, and calmness under pressure.

“Playing against him back then, you just realised how complete a player he was,” Farrell has previously said.
