Pacific Nations Cup: Round 1 - Tyler Ardron hits Canadian try-scoring record against USA

Tonga overpowered Samoa in a bruising all-Pacific clash, that has the Sea Eagles up and running for the rest of their Pacific Nations Cup campaign. The early markers have already been laid down, as Fiji and Japan are both set to join the fray this coming weekend, following their opening round byes. Canada claimed a landmark victory in Calgary, storming past rivals USA 34–20 in the Pacific Nations Cup opener. In his first test since 2021, Tyler Ardron was simply unstoppable, crossing four times to equal the Canadian record for tries in a single match.

The hosts set the tone early, Ardron powering over after just three minutes. Yet the Eagles struck back, with Dom Besag and Rufus McLean capitalising on sharp work from AJ MacGinty to edge the visitors ahead. Canada kept their composure, however, and Ardron’s second and third tries had the sides level at 17–17 by the break.

MacGinty’s boot briefly restored a USA lead after halftime, but the night belonged to Canada. Nelson’s penalty steadied the ship before Ardron’s record-tying fourth try flipped momentum for good. Nelson then turned finisher himself, pouncing on a spilled high ball to cap a famous Canadian win.

A sold-out McMahon Stadium roared its approval, with Ardron’s heroics underpinned by tireless Canadian defence and the composure of young debutant scrum-half Stephen Webb. For head coach Stephen Meehan, this was a statement performance to ignite Canada’s Pacific Nations Cup campaign.

Tonga delivered a powerful statement in the Pacific Nations Cup, overpowering Samoa 30–16 with a display built on breakdown dominance and clinical finishing.

The Ikale Tahi flew out of the blocks in front of a raucous home crowd, with Siosiua Moala crashing over after just six minutes. Patrick Pellegrini added a penalty before Sonatane Takulua seized on a loose Samoan lineout to stretch the lead. Samoa’s Melani Matavao offered resistance, winning penalties that AJ Alatimu converted, but at 20–6 down at halftime, the visitors were chasing shadows.

Samoa showed fight in the second half, with Tuna Tuitama finally crossing after sustained pressure. Yet Tonga’s forwards seized back momentum, Pellegrini’s boot adding insurance points before Sam Moli powered over to put the contest beyond reach. A late Melani Nanai try gave Samoa brief consolation, but the night belonged to the Ikale Tahi.

It was a statement performance from a Tonga side brimming with physicality and composure. With Pellegrini steering expertly and the pack dominant, they sent a clear warning to their Pacific rivals.
