Phil Dowson highlights crucial gap between domestic and European rugby before Champions Cup quarter-final

He noted that European fixtures bring a unique intensity, even when facing a side they know well.

The match is a rematch of the 2024 Premiership final, when Saints secured their first title since 2014 by holding off a strong Bath comeback.

Despite being reduced to 14 men, Bath pushed hard, but Northampton edged a dramatic 25–21 win at Twickenham.

Scrum-half Alex Mitchell scored the decisive try with seven minutes remaining, sealing victory after Bath had fought back to take the lead following prop Beno Obano’s early dismissal.

Northampton arrive off the back of reaching last season’s Champions Cup final, where they were beaten by Bordeaux-Bègles after an impressive run that included a win over Leinster in Dublin.

Dowson highlighted the contrast between domestic clashes and European knockout rugby.

"In a knockout game, there's a frisson of a slightly different energy, the fact that we'll be out of the tournament if we don't get it right and likewise them makes it different and exciting.

"One of the great things about a European tournament is we go to lots of different places that we've not been to before, not been for a long time, which are different.

"We go to The Rec every year but at the same time I do think it's different and we are excited for that opportunity."

He also explained how that heightened energy tends to show itself on matchday.

"It will be in the crowd, the atmosphere will be lively. The way we've approached it with it being a knockout game and how we have already got one up on them in the league and upset them at their place, that will make it a very intense game.

"I think they'll come out the blocks and the crowd will respond to that. In the past couple of years they've got some momentum and that generally gets a really good crowd going."

The last meeting at The Rec came in December, when Tommy Freeman’s hat-trick inspired Northampton to a commanding 41–21 win, sending them to the top of the Prem table.

Reflecting on that result, Dowson said there are lessons to take, but also cautioned that Bath will be highly motivated in response.

"We take elements of the game from it and you take elements of your performance but understand that that's being spoken about in their meeting rooms and we need to be ready for the intensity that they're going to bring to make sure that doesn't happen again."
