PWR: Gloucester-Hartpury 29-28 Trailfinders Women - Champions challenged in one-point nail-biter

Trailfinders capitalised on an unsettled Gloucester-Hartpury side, who were forced into a late withdrawal of Nel Metcalfe alongside several early changes.

Gloucester-Hartpury captain Zoe Stratford earned Player of the Match for her influential role in the line-outs and rolling mauls. For the visitors, Rosie Inman stood out, repeatedly exploiting gaps in the Gloucester-Hartpury defence.

Gloucester-Hartpury started brightly, launching an early wave of attack, but failed to convert their first visit to the 22. Trailfinders quickly wrestled back momentum and surged forward.

A cynical illegal rip by Natasha Hunt left the champions down to 14 players for 10 minutes, and Trailfinders struck instantly, with Alanna Borland crossing to put them seven points ahead.

Matters worsened for the three-time champions when Kelsey Jones was forced off with an injury. But, in classic Gloucester-Hartpury fashion, they hit back swiftly: Jade Shekells flew over the line to level the score with just under 20 minutes played.

Back to a full complement, Gloucester-Hartpury began to overpower Trailfinders. Neve Jones crashed over to give the Circus their first lead of the afternoon.

With 33 minutes gone, Gloucester-Hartpury made a tactical switch, replacing try-scorer Shekells with young talent Molly Bunker in the hope she could unlock the Trailfinders defence.

Despite Trailfinders enjoying a strong spell of possession late in the half, ill-discipline began to creep in, allowing the home side to regain control. In the final minutes, Gloucester-Hartpury’s dominant pack struck again: the forwards powered over, with Kate Williams grounding their third try and closing out what had been a turbulent first half.

Trailfinders burst out of the blocks after the break, launching wave after wave of attack. Gloucester-Hartpury’s defence, however, held firm—even as discipline wavered in the red zone.

Momentum then swung back to the champions. Their rolling maul once again proved unstoppable, and Sarah Beckett forced her way over to secure the bonus point.

A slick spell of play from the Trailfinders backs sent Vicky Laflin over, cutting the deficit to 10 points. Gloucester-Hartpury hit back swiftly, with Beckett—on her 50th appearance for the Circus—grabbing her second to push the lead to 17.

Trailfinders refused to fold. They swept forward, exploiting defensive gaps before Borland crossed for her second, narrowing the margin to eight.

With four minutes remaining, Claire Gallagher dotted down and Meg Jones slotted yet another perfect conversion, bringing Trailfinders within a single point.

But Gloucester-Hartpury held their nerve as the clock went red, defending resolutely to secure a hard-fought victory.
