Rugby World Cup ban update: World Rugby issues statement

Fears over Manu Samoa’s future have grown amid an escalating governance dispute between the Samoan government and Lakapi Samoa, the country's World Rugby-recognised governing body.

The Samoan government withdrew its recognition and financial support from Lakapi Samoa on July 30 following concerns over the administration of the sport.

A rival body, the Samoa Rugby Football Union, has subsequently been established, leaving major questions over the country's rugby future.

However, World Rugby has now confirmed that there will be no immediate changes to Samoa's international schedule while discussions continue.

A World Rugby spokesman, quoted by RNZ Pacific, said: “You’ll appreciate that we are not going to comment on the specifics of live discussions, but we all remain firmly focused on reaching a positive outcome for all parties.”

The governing body added: “Our most recent statement stands while the finer points are being negotiated with all parties.”

World Rugby also confirmed there was currently “no impact” on Lakapi Samoa’s high-performance programmes.

That means Samoa’s international teams will continue operating as normal for the time being while attempts are made to resolve the dispute.

Despite World Rugby's update, Lakapi Samoa CEO Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun has warned of potentially enormous consequences if an agreement cannot be reached.

Speaking to RNZ Pacific, Seumanu warned that sanctions could effectively bring Manu Samoa to a halt.

“If we get to that point, then there will be no point [in] rugby in Samoa because once we get sanctioned, then there will be no more Manu Samoa, no funding, and that [would be] a great loss to us,” he said.

He then raised the possibility of a lengthy suspension.

“It is very concerning, because if that happens, then we might get banned for up to four years,” Seumanu said.

Crucially, that four-year figure is a warning from the Lakapi Samoa CEO and not a sanction that has been announced by World Rugby.
