"Bragging Rights" - Scotland player ratings vs Wales: Women's Rugby World Cup

Scotland started off in lightning-quick fashion as McGhie scored within the first minute. Helen Nelson opportunistically made a break through the Welsh line before passing off to the winger. McGhie finished off the rest as Wales missed two tackles.

Wales responded quickly, utilising their driving maul well. Lleucu George put in an excellent kick to give her side important field position. Alex Callender grounded the ball after a strong platform as a result of a clean lineout drill.

However, Scotland did not their heads go down as McGhie crossed for her second. A sustained period of Scottish pressure, notable marked by Lisa Thomson's aggressive carry through the centre of the park, ended with a simple put down for the Trailfinders star.

Wales' Keira Bevan made the match a two-point game with a penalty kick but Scotland were dominating proceedings. Scrumhalf Leia Brebner-Holden snuck under the Welsh defence to score as Scotland kept battering the Welsh line to send her side 17-8 up at half time. Wales were simply not at the races and it got worse as Gwen Crabb was sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle.

As Wales started to tire, Evie Gallagher crashed over to increase Scotland's lead after battering at the try line. Emma Orr crossed over late on to add Scotland's sixth try on what turned out to be a record breaking win for the Scots. A record winning margin for Scotland against Wales as their previous best was 26 points from a 40-14 win in a friendly last year.

Scotland head coach Byran Easson aptly summed up his side's performance as "ruthless", as his side have given themselves the best start possible in the tournament and a strong chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Strong part of the brilliant Scotland back three. Rollie operated well within the fulcrum and often found herself in the right positions at the right time. Her kicking game from full back was accurate and put Wales under pressure on multiple occasions.

Her wing counterpart will take all the plaudits but Lloyd did not put a foot wrong. It was clearly part of Scotland's gameplan to use McGhie to target Wales' right side of the defence so Lloyd did not receive much ball. However, her defensive impact should not be underestimated and she looked very comfortable on the ball.

A defensive rock and nifty in attack too. She came up with a couple of turnovers, particularly a momentum-shifting one in the first half. This was perhaps the turning point within the match as Scotland gained a strong foothold. Crashed over in the last few minutes to cap off an impressive victory

Worked well with Orr in the centres and put in a great defensive shift. She put in a huge tackle early on in the first half to quell Wales' attack. The inside centre was also a key part of Scotland's second try as she put in a dominant carry to create space for McGhie on the outside.

A superb performance and a player of the match showing. A hat-trick performance, with her first try coming under one minute. Everything that was good with Scotland came down her channel and she finished the attacks off with excellent finishing. One to watch for the rest of the tournament.

A commanding presence in the middle of the field. The creator of the first try for McGhie with some brilliant heads up play. She slotted in well in the back field when out of possession to receive kicks and returned her own kicks with precision. A little work needed off the tee but she was calm and collected throughout.

Connected well with Nelson in the halfbacks. Her ability to create fast ball off the deck was critical to Scotland's success and she was rewarded with a try for her efforts. The scrumhalf was able to snipe under the Welsh defence in the first half.

An imposing figure in the loose, Bartlett did all the gritty stuff well. Important carries and was able to hit rucks like a freight train. She operated well and showed her hands when pulling the ball back to Nelson to release the fast backs.

A nuisance in the breakdown and caused Wales lots of issues. She put in an important jackal turnover on the ninth minute. Her scrummaging was decent and physicality was supreme. Her lineout throwing left some to be desired as Scotland gave away some territory from the set piece. Brought off early on in the second half.

A quieter match than her front row counterparts. Some decent work in the scrum, shown best by Wales replacing their full front row within the first twenty minutes of the second half. Though, she did not put a foot wrong.

In the engine room, Wassell put in a quality shift. Good yards when it came to carrying and contributed well to Scotland's defensive effort. She made sure that Wales were unable to threaten in the second half.

Similar to Wassell, she did everything that a second row should do. Energetic in the tight, good set-piece presence and kept Wales under consistent pressure throughout.

A captain’s performance. Relentless in defense and setting standards with her work rate. She smashed into rucks and made her presence felt in every collision. A tireless leader who embodied Scotland’s grit and class.

Dynamic at the breakdown, she constantly harassed Welsh ball-carriers and won turnovers at key moments. Covered the field like an extra back, making dominant tackles and linking play smartly. One of Scotland’s unsung heroes on the day.

Took her try well. Off a tap from penalty, she received a perfect pass to crash over. Hard-running and direct, she punched holes in the Welsh defense with her carrying. Defensively disciplined too. A strong, balanced performance at the base of the scrum.

Scotland’s bench provided stability and impact when called upon. The front-row changes maintained set-piece control, while the fresh forwards added energy in defense and at the breakdown. Jade Konkel stood out with her powerful carries, injecting real momentum. Hooker Elis Martin also performed well. In the backs, the replacements quickened the tempo and helped manage the closing stages with composure, ensuring Scotland finished the game strongly without losing intensity.
