Who is the Scotland vs England referee?
Nika Amashukeli (born 18 September 1994, Tbilisi, Georgia) is one of the leading rugby union referees in world rugby and a trailblazer for Georgian officials.
Amashukeli began his rugby journey as a player, representing Georgia at youth levels. However, recurring injuries forced him to retire at just 20 years old. Instead of leaving the sport, he turned to refereeing — a decision that transformed his career.
He rose quickly through the ranks after joining a referee development program supported by the Georgian Rugby Union. In 2015, he made his international refereeing debut. By 2021, he became the first Georgian referee to officiate a Tier 1 international match, marking a historic moment for Georgian rugby.
Amashukeli has since refereed matches in the Six Nations and was selected as an official for the Rugby World Cup 2023, confirming his place among the sport’s elite referees.
Known for his calm authority, fitness, and strong communication skills, Amashukeli is respected by players and coaches worldwide. His journey from injured youth player to World Cup referee makes him an inspiring figure in modern rugby.
