Who is Scotland vs New Zealand referee Nic Berry?
Born in Brisbane, 41-year-old Nic Berry is a former professional player turned world-class referee.
Before picking up the whistle, Berry was a scrum-half for the Queensland Reds, Racing 92, and London Wasps. However, his playing career was cut short in 2013 due to concussion.
Two years later, he swapped boots for the whistle and quickly rose through the ranks. By 2016, he was part of the Super Rugby referee panel, and in 2017, he took charge of the U20 World Championship final before making his senior Test debut in Samoa vs Scotland.
Berry officiated his first Tier One Test in 2018 (Ireland v Argentina) and joined the Six Nations referee team the following year, overseeing matches in Wales’ 2019 Grand Slam-winning campaign.
He was also selected for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, where he took charge of the third-place play-off.
Emotional World Cup moment for Nic Berry
The Scotland vs New Zealand referee shared one of the most emotional moments of the 2023 Rugby World Cup after Argentina’s 19–10 win over Samoa.
Berry broke down in tears following the match, mourning the death of his mentor and friend Andrew Cole, a former Australian referee who passed away from cancer in 2022.
Cole had hoped to see Berry surpass his record of 31 Test matches. His widow, Anne-Maree, travelled to France to present Berry with a replica of Cole’s World Cup medal — a gesture that moved the referee to tears.
“It was a wonderful surprise,” Berry told RugbyPassTV. “A weekend I’ll never forget.”
What to expect from the Scotland vs New Zealand referee
Known for his clear communication and willingness to let games flow, Nic Berry is respected by players and coaches alike.
Expect the Scotland vs New Zealand referee to allow attacking rugby to thrive at Murrayfield — which should make for a thrilling spectacle between two sides who love to run the ball.
