South African prop hints at possible international switch ahead of World Cup

Zimbabwe’s national side, the Sables, secured their place at the Rugby World Cup 2027 by edging out Namibia 30–28 in the final of the Rugby Africa Cup 2025. The match took place at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.

This win marks a significant milestone, as Zimbabwe return to the World Cup for the first time since 1991, ending a 36-year absence from the global stage.

Although born in Zimbabwe, Matongo had previously expressed ambitions of following in the footsteps of Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira, another Zimbabwe-born loosehead prop who went on to represent the Springboks.

At just 24 years old, however, a decision to represent Zimbabwe would effectively close the door, at least for now, on his Springbok aspirations.

He gained recognition through standout performances in competitions such as Craven Week, representing KwaZulu-Natal, the Varsity Cup, and SA U20 trials.

His strengths include a low body position, powerful leg drive, and composure in set pieces.

He initially developed within the Sharks academy after finishing school in Durban.

Later, he moved to the Stormers setup, making his senior debut for Western Province in the 2024 Currie Cup. He debuted for the Stormers in the 2024–25 European Rugby Champions Cup.

Speculation about a potential switch arose after Matongo shared an Instagram post from Harare, captioned “Full heart.” While the message is open to interpretation, it has fuelled suggestions that he may be considering representing Zimbabwe.

Whether he ultimately commits to the Sables or continues pursuing a Springbok future remains to be seen.
