"Spark" - Rassie Erasmus delivers verdict on Eben Etzebeth's Springbok future

Rassie Erasmus has shed light on the situation surrounding Eben Etzebeth after the veteran lock was left out of South Africa’s emphatic victory over the All Blacks this past weekend.

Etzebeth, who played in the defeat at Eden Park the week before, was absent from the Springboks’ historic 43-10 triumph. His omission raised eyebrows among supporters, particularly as it was not due to injury.

“Eben can’t play every single game — if we push him too hard, he’ll burn out. We still want him around for the next few years,” explained Duane Vermeulen during a press conference in Auckland.

While Erasmus is not yet ready to draw the curtain on Etzebeth’s international career, it is becoming increasingly clear that his days as an automatic starter may be nearing their end.

Rassie wanted a spark against the All Blacks last weekend and he certainly got it.

Whether the legendary lock will still be part of the Springboks setup at the 2027 Rugby World Cup remains uncertain.

WILLIE LE ROUX – TIME TO STEP ASIDE

Le Roux’s experience and calm head have long been invaluable at fullback. But his performance in the 24-17 defeat at Eden Park was well below par.

Right now, Damian Willemse and Aphelele Fassi are both in better form and deserve opportunities. Willemse, in particular, made a huge statement with his Man of the Match display in the 43-10 demolition of New Zealand.

It may be time for Le Roux to move into a supporting role, letting the new generation shine.

HANDRÉ POLLARD – NEEDS TO REIGNITE

Pollard is a World Cup hero and one of the Springboks’ most trusted generals, but in 2025 he has been solid rather than exceptional.

Rested for the big Wellington win, he’ll need to rediscover his spark quickly, especially with Manie Libbok breathing down his neck. Libbok was outstanding off the bench and has the flair to take this team to another level.

Pollard isn’t done – but he can’t cruise on past glories.

EBEN ETZEBETH – SHADOW OF HIS BEST

The enforcer has been the heartbeat of the Springbok pack for over a decade, but Etzebeth hasn’t hit his usual towering standards this year.

Rested for the Wellington clash, his absence only highlighted how good RG Snyman was. The towering lock brought energy, physicality, and dominance – the Viking looks ready to take over.

Etzebeth will bounce back, but right now, Snyman deserves the start.
