Springbok star Eben Etzebeth open to short-term Prem move

Springbok enforcer Eben Etzebeth could be set for a blockbuster short-term stint in the Gallagher Prem following the 2027 Rugby World Cup, according to RUCK sources.

The towering lock became South Africa’s most-capped player last weekend, pulling on the famous green and gold jersey for the 128th time against Australia. Despite his incredible mileage, the 32-year-old still looks like he has plenty more to give at the very highest level.

Etzebeth came close to joining Saracens back in 2016, before eventually moving to Toulon. He later secured an early release from that deal in 2022, returning home to sign a five-year contract with the Stormers.

By the time 2027 rolls around, Etzebeth will be 35, almost 36, and could well hold the record as the most-capped player in rugby history. Unsurprisingly, there is already huge interest in securing his services for a swansong spell in Europe.

One potential destination is the newly ambitious Newcastle Red Bulls, who have hinted at big spending in the coming years following their recent takeover.

Etzebeth has battled concussion issues in the past, but remains hungry for success. His priority is still South Africa, as he chases an unprecedented third straight Rugby World Cup triumph – a feat that would all but cement his status as the greatest lock the game has ever seen.
