Springboks star receives lengthy ban for high shot in URC South African derby clash

Referee Christopher Allinson ruled the tackle to be reckless under Law 9.13, which prohibits contact above the shoulders, even if the tackle starts lower. Initially facing a six-week ban, the one-capped Springbok's uspension was reduced by two weeks after he accepted responsibility and expressed remorse, leaving him sidelined for four games. This is the second red card of Venter’s young career, following a sending-off against Glasgow Warriors in May 2024, which factored into the disciplinary process.

The flanker will now miss the Lions’ upcoming EPCR Challenge Cup fixtures against Lyon (10 January) and Perpignan (17 January), along with URC clashes against the Ospreys (23 January) and Vodacom Bulls (31 January). The Lions will only be back in domestic action at Ellis Park on 28 February against the Stormers, giving Venter over a month to recover and reflect on his tackling technique.

The decision was confirmed by Judicial Officer Ms. Rhian Williams, who noted that while the tackle warranted a mid-range six-week ban, Venter’s cooperation, remorse, and conduct during the disciplinary hearing earned him a two-week reduction. Venter’s absence leaves a notable gap in the Lions’ back row, where his aggression, defensive presence, and try-scoring threat have been key this season. The squad will have to adapt quickly for a challenging block of European and domestic fixtures.
