Springboks vs All Blacks referee Matthew Carley graded as fans make feelings clear

Matthew Carley found himself at the centre of debate following New Zealand’s 33-16 victory over the Springboks in the opening Test of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry.

The English referee was handed one of the biggest appointments of the year as the two international heavyweights collided at Ellis Park.
With plenty of discussion around the officials before kick-off, Carley’s performance was always going to come under the microscope.
And, predictably, supporters were divided after the final whistle.

How we’re grading Matthew Carley
Before getting into the rating, it is worth making one thing clear.
We’re rugby fans, not qualified referees, and this grade isn’t an attempt to analyse every breakdown, scrum or marginal decision frame by frame.
Instead, we’re judging Carley on how he handled the game as a whole – his control, communication, consistency and management of a hugely physical Test match.
Matthew Carley – 6/10
Overall, Carley handled an incredibly intense contest reasonably well.
He appeared confident in his decision-making and, importantly, was prepared to take responsibility for major calls rather than allowing the TMO to dominate proceedings.
However, there were enough contentious moments to prevent him receiving a higher mark.
Fabian Holland incident sparks debate
One of the biggest talking points surrounded Fabian Holland’s crucial second-half try.
The All Blacks lock charged down South Africa before eventually finishing the move himself to put New Zealand back in front.
Some Springbok supporters argued Holland had been offside before the chargedown.
One fan highlighted the incident and claimed Holland had been around “1m50 offside”.
Another wrote: “Why is Etzebeth offside but not Holland? One example of many.”
A further supporter questioned the consistency of the decision, writing: “Carley got this wrong as well as the charge down try – he penalised Etzebeth for the same thing in the first half. Inconsistent!”
It became one of the major refereeing debates to emerge from the opening Test.
Yellow cards questioned
Discipline was another source of frustration for some Springbok supporters.
New Zealand came under considerable pressure at the scrum during periods of the contest but avoided losing a player to the sin-bin.
South Africa, meanwhile, finished the game temporarily reduced to 13 following yellow cards for Cobus Reinach and Marco van Staden.
One supporter described the situation as “ludicrous card asymmetry”, questioning why repeated All Blacks infringements had not resulted in similar punishment.
Again, it was an area where Carley’s consistency was questioned rather than necessarily an individual decision being clearly right or wrong.
Carley also earns plenty of praise
However, the reaction was far from universally negative.
In fact, plenty of supporters believed Carley handled an incredibly difficult assignment well.
One wrote: “Carley did a great job. Boks only have themselves to blame. All Blacks won fair and square.”
Another simply posted: “Carley did a great job!!”
There was also praise for Carley being willing to take control of the decision-making process.
Discussing one incident involving Ardie Savea, a supporter wrote: “Carley did well to overrule him, especially on that Savea tackle.”
Another fan was even more complimentary.
They wrote: “Matt Carley is a truly immense referee. With all the build-up, that game so easily could’ve been a mess. Instead, he stayed on task and allowed it to morph into the intense Test match it deserved to be.”
That is perhaps Carley’s biggest positive.
This was a fixture carrying enormous expectation and featuring two hugely physical teams, yet the referee never appeared to completely lose control of proceedings.
Springbok fans refuse to blame referee
Perhaps the most telling reaction came from South African supporters who were critical of Carley but refused to use his performance as an excuse for the defeat.
One wrote: “Carley wasn’t great but you also can’t have that many knock-ons in the opposition 22 and expect to win. We have to eat this one, it is on us.”
Another delivered an even more brutal assessment of South Africa’s performance:
“No complaints. You can’t gift a team 23 turnovers and win at this level. I didn’t see Carley knock on once.”
That ultimately feels like the fairest assessment.
Carley certainly wasn’t flawless, and Springbok supporters can point towards decisions they believe lacked consistency.
But when grading his management of the Test rather than dissecting every marginal decision, there was plenty he did well.
Most importantly, the referee was not the reason South Africa lost.
New Zealand were more clinical when their opportunities arrived and punished a Springbok side who repeatedly failed to turn promising positions into points.
