Super Rugby plans to cut team, sparking backlash

report on Tuesday revealed that players were informed earlier in the day that the franchise will not continue into next season, citing ongoing funding issues.

If confirmed, the decision would mark a continued contraction of the competition, which began with 12 teams in 2022.

By 2027, it is expected to feature just 10 sides, following the collapse of the Melbourne Rebels after the 2024 season due to severe financial troubles.

Uncertainty around Moana Pasifika’s future had been building during the offseason, particularly amid concerns over the financial stability of majority owners Pasifika Medical Association.

The team, initially established by New Zealand Rugby with support from World Rugby, showed signs of progress last season, highlighted by the high-profile signing of All Blacks star Ardie Savea.

Although Savea is currently on sabbatical in Japan, he remains contracted with the club through to 2027.

There have also been changes off the field, with head coach Tana Umaga joining the All Blacks setup under Dave Rennie, leaving the franchise in need of new leadership beyond this year.

Moana Pasifika has also faced challenges establishing a consistent home base, hosting matches across multiple venues including Go Media Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, as well as Pukekohe, Rotorua and North Harbour Stadium in Albany.

Former All Black, Samoa and Highlanders representative Lima Sopoaga urged action on social media, calling on decision-makers to step in.
